Really though, having disabled family members, I think he'd have enough sense not to say anything rude to Hanako. From what little I've seem of him he mostly seems kinda clueless about the world. Or maybe he's just shy? I suspect if you put him and Hanako in a room together the silence would be deafening.

Well, if he's been around disabled family so long, chances are he doesn't really even think about it anymore...So he might slip up. And that could be a great scene.

Yes, they do. Searching for "swimming prosthetics" (without the quotes) returns more than 3 million results. After all, normal diving flippers are a sort of prosthetic, so adapting the concept to someone who doesn't have legs isn't that much of a stretch.
On the subject of prosthetics for swimming, this is really cool.
