Yeah, slightly embarrassing, but I definitely ran across this on a thread on 4chan's /b/ last weekend.
No, I'm not proud, and I will not discuss the pretenses that I had about it when I decided to look into it.
After sending that entire weekend blowing through everyone's paths fully, I can say that it blew any idea I had about it out of the water. It's my first VN, and I'm amazed and the connection I made to it and the different contemplative times I've had about it since.
The Escapist forums, actually, a couple of weeks ago. I go there pretty frequently and when I saw the topic about it I was Intrigued. I'm glad I found Katawa Shoujo, I probably wouldn't have found out about it.
was searching for new anime to get hook with, end up searching for VNs. Just read the description of KS, without any character's sample or anything, i thought its pretty unique given the whole project is taking so much time. Bless-fully, finished Emi's path, now onto Lily. Then creeping on this board here.
All thumbs goes to the person who thought of this place, u rawkk..
I kept hearing info about it just prior to it coming out (after all, a game where you get to date crippled people? Kinda hit the news hard), and it entered my awareness, but only as a "Oh, it exists".
Then about half a week after it came out, I had a particularly boring afternoon, and while browsing facebook someone had posted a link to a news site talking about the game, and I figured that I might download it because it might kill half an hour or so.
Understatement of the century
Routes played: Emi (10/10), Shizune (6/10), Lilly (9/10), Hanako (9/10), Rin (7.5/10)
Emi > Hanako = Lilly > Rin > Shizune

My interest, or more aptly curiosity, was piqued by an image on some sharing site with some kind of joke about a couple of characters I didn't recognize, and was wondering what they were referring to. I found the game after simply googling "emi rin" if I recall correctly. I started playing the game with no knowledge of the subject matter (or the meaning of the title), and was instantly hooked. The past few weeks have been consumed with playing the game over and over again. I'm a sucker for a good story and everything about this game reeled me right in.
I was not entirely surprised to later find that the project was born on 4chan, but the quality and tastefulness of the production certainly speak for themselves. I was even more surprised to notice that "MMXII" means the game was less than a few weeks old when I discovered it! I'm glad to have discovered it by happy accident, to be sure.
Would you come with me if I ran off to be a pirate?

No shame, just own up son.
I came looking for rediculously offensive 4-chan trainwreck disability porn. Yeah, got something way better.
The only difference between theory and reality is that in theory there is no difference, but in reality there is.
I saw this post (which is linked above) few weeks earlier, and I somehow became curious about the game. (strange though, because the thread mostly talks about how people don't like katawa shoujo now I guess they are wrong about it!)
