Hype
Hype
The paths are complete and the release is on the horizon. Naturally, we're excited, but there's hype to the game and hype let's us down sometimes. We build it up ourselves and then when a final product is released, it didn't fit with our vision of it, and therefore it's a piece of crap. Rarely do they exceed our expectations. I'm afraid this is going to happen with KS. What do you guys think ?
Re: Hype
I've been burned(ahem) enough by hype in my (admittedly short) life that I don't let it get to me personally. I may ride the wave and let my expectations rise, but when it comes time to actually play it, I'm going to keep an open mind. If its anything like Act 1, it'll be awesome, but the devs, despite what TV tropes may say, are not Gods. They're only human, and its only a human work, so its going to have highs(shizune) and lows(emi), and I'm just going to enjoy the whole package, good and bad.
Haters are gonna hate, the fandumb is going to do their thing, and there's probably going to be a lot of rage about this and that due to expectations, but that's part and parcel of making video games.

Re: Hype
The only thing I've ever hyped to the point of disappointment when the actual thing came out was Shakugan no Shana season 3. GOD how I hated that, and I looked forward to it for 1-2 years (though I can't find too many other people that didn't like it, maybe I'm just weird. Whatever)! Otherwise, I never really let the hype get so bad that I'm burned by it, so I'm not too worried about it.purple haired Katawa Shoujo character wrote:The paths are complete and the release is on the horizon. Re: Hype
Y'know, I've been following it so long now that really, I'm not gonna be disappointed. The devs are good people who've gained my trust in their judgement. Otherwise I wouldn't be as excited now as I was when I first played the demo on its release. You can let your excitement and hype build up into a crescendo that ultimately can only lead to disappointment, like, I don't know, people following Fable 2's whole "YOU CAN DO ANYTHING". Or you can just appreciate what there is. I'll be thankful when it's out, just for having it completed.
And christ on a cracker, I'm positive that I'll have friggin' Niagara Falls coming out of my eyes by the end. My heart has been won. I'm so into the universe that you're making me put off suicide just to see how the story completes. So really, even if it's not the epic some people expect, it's what's already been created that holds all the value. It's not ONLY speculation and hype about something with no grounding. Look at the community. A 2k+ Shimmie of fan art, almost 250 topics in the fanfiction section, and a lot of people who are here because of what's already been seen.
I'd say we're good.

Re: Hype
GOD DON'T REMIND ME. Oh wait, you said Fable 2, which wasn't quite disappointing. Okay, I may need to edit my post to two things disappointed me: Shana III and Fable III. As long as KS doesn't get two sequels we'll be fine.Sleet wrote:people following Fable 2's whole "YOU CAN DO ANYTHING".

Of the series I only played Fable III, and I was STILL disappointed.Yubiseiharukana wrote:Fable III.
And of the hype, I haven't established a vision of what's going to happen in the game. I only know that it'll be good. I look forward to the new experiences.
It's a good thing Shizune is deaf, she is the only one who can stand (not) hearing "Wahaha~!" over and over.
Re: Hype
Hype? Eh, not all that much.
Most videogames that are near release are hyped by their respective PR departments, sometimes warming people up properly, sometimes creating expectations that end up not being lived up to, resulting in a backlash.
Up to this point, the devs have kept a remarkably (to a surprising degree) low profile on the PR section. Most blog posts are rather neutral in tone and no carefully crafted PR campaign, complete with teaser trailers and countdowns, has been started. So if you feel hyped up and then let down, it's nobody's fault but your own, since at this point you can't accuse 4LS of hyping/overhyping their upcoming project.

Re: Hype
Hey, it's a free product, so no harm done, even if it does fall flat after the promising beginning. Only some time would've been lost, and I have plenty of that to spare.
Re: Hype
The only type I felt dissapointed because of over expectancy was with the Blair Witch Project but it was because of the people praising once and again and then when I got around to watch it I had so huge expectatives of it because of what I was been told that it was impossible for the film to meassure up. It ended up being a huge disspointment. Granted I was only 11 at the time iirc.
Shizune=Akira > Lilly > Emi > Hanako > Rin (but all of them have a place in my heart and some other more interesting locations XP).
Re: Hype
I'm sure the devs have put far, FAR too much effort into KS for it to suck, so... I'm not expecting to be disappointed.
But that's kind of how disappointment occurs, isn't it... Hmm.
I really, really don't think there's any reason to be worried, though. And at the VERY, VERY least you've already had months or years of community and content, so in a way KS has already been giving you entertainment for probably longer than most actually-released games you've ever owned.

Re: Hype
It's definitely possible to overhype a free game. It happened before. Just because people haven't paid money for something doesn't mean they can't be disappointed with it. If people had certain expectations and then you artificially raise those expectations with a PR surge (including stuff like teasers, countdowns and interviews/articles on other sites) up to a point where those expectations cannot realistically be met by the game itself, you've overhyped it.
