I had a deaf friend once. he was a real chill guy and read lips really well, but there was always a communication barrier. I couldn't understand him when he spoke most of the time and reading lips is straining a lot of the time, so he couldn't always guess what I was saying. Overall, all we did was smoke weed and chill and had good times.

The fact he did it twice after little response leads me to believe he is an idiot. That and his conventions. But you're right that there's not much point to reasoning with him if he's not coming back.
