It occurred to me that folks keep saying that Miki isn't dark skinned, she's just tanned. And tanned implies tan lines. So...

Assuming you were being serious...it's all in layering. Shade values are painted in a dark brown (in this case) on a Multiply layer at 15-25% opacity, depending upon the piece. Highlights (in this case, untanned skin) are painted in white on a Screen layer, also at lower opacities. Like so:

That's just absolutely wonderful. great work.

The only criticism I have is that Miki's skin tone seems a bit too close to Suzu's.

Your color and shading on this one is awesome and I love how you did the scars. It's also nice to see a more realistic small breast size that isn't just anime boob.

There are two minor critiques I have though.

The line she has midface, it's hard to tell if that's supposed to be her nose or a stray hair at first.

I don't think the lip biting comes across that well in the picture either. Admittedly, it is hard to do in an anime style where character's aren't usually drawn with lips. Maybe you could show some teeth or color the top lip so it's more obvious she's supposed to be biting the bottom.
