I figured it was her dad because why else would she drift off? That's the only person (most probably) that she lost seeing as how I'm sure she didn't make room for anyone else after the whole fire killing her father thing.

I believe we went through this somewhere. There are chess sets for the blind that include distinguishing shapes to mark piece type and color, and each piece has a peg that fits into a hole that's in each square, preventing accidental movement.

.................
Okay then, how does a dog understand the intricacies of strategy and know what, how and when to apply this or that movement to a game?
Sure dogs and wolves can use some strategy when hunting for food, but I doubt a dog can learn how to play chess....
I'm leaning towards the option that crud was just joking.

Well, you see, Niji was a state-of-the-art in bioengineering, hyperintelligent seeing-eye dog and sadly, while Yamaku has great funding as a testbed for such technology, the scientists involved weren't able to keep him alive for much more than a year due to problems with the cloning and aging techniques available at the time.

What Crud forgot to mention though, is that Niji would only play strip-chess with her.

But she would have already won from the beginning because that dirty dog was naked all the time!
Ahh, Morticia? I would die for her. I would kill for her. Either way, what bliss.

The main reason why Niji is not present in act 1 anymore.
He won a strip-chess game against Hanako and saw her naked and all shy about it, before going HNNG.
Lucky bastard died in bliss.

I'm betting on a Bergmanesque flashback sequence when it's revealed that Hanako played chess with Death, and that's how she survived the fire...

A man walking in the park passes by a man playing chess with a dog. He watches for a while in silence, but finally feels the need to comment: "Wow your dog must be incredibly intelligent!" The other man replies "Nah, he's not that smart, I'm beating him 4 games to 2."
