Katawa Shoujo: Persona

Post by Heartless Wanderer »

This is an plot bunny I seized upon during an idle musing that I decided to run with, but am not yet altogether serious about. The basic premise is this: plop Yamaku High somewhere in the same version of Japan as the Persona series of video games, make Hisao a Wild Card and turn the entire plot and cast of Katawa Shoujo into the exoskeleton of a Persona game. Obviously I'm no game designer, though, so as much as I would love this to be my own personal pet fangame project I just decided to write it out as fiction. So far, only a brief prologue in which Hisao is summoned to the Velvet Room while dreaming has been written.

I confess, I'm flying entirely by the seat of my pants on this one, moreso than usual. I probably won't have a clear picture of what direction I want to take it until I've given Katawa Shoujo a few more readthroughs, so that I'm well-enough equipped to do the cast justice. At this point I have only vaguest idea of what the threat is and the notion that Maki Sonomura (from Persona and the Persona 2 duology) has taken a job as a counselor at Yamaku High, which seems a logical step from her occupation in Persona 2.

This story idea was not conceived without irony. But explaining that would be an insult to the intelligence of anyone reading this, so suffice it to say that the irony was intentional and I was silently laughing like a madman while writing this.

The Velvet Room prologue is here: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8648176/1/K ... jo-Persona

Any and all feedback is appreciated. And don't worry, I exist within FanFiction.Net's 1% minority... I don't get all pissy when someone criticizes my work, although I may opt to ignore it if that "someone" is obnoxious about it.

To be honest, I don't think a crossover of those two settings has much to offer storywise. You wrote yourself that you have no idea where you want to take it.
So for now just one bit of advice: Don't assume that your readers know (or even know about) Persona especially Persona 2 . (Was that even released outside of Japan? I've only ever seen Persona 3 and 4...)

Persona 2 is a dualogy. The second game was the only one released in the States for the PS1, but the first one was released on the PSP a while ago. Persona 1 was released in heavily-Americanized form for the PS1 but a more faithful PSP port was released a while ago, too. They're also supposed to be releasing a PSP version of the second Persona 2 game, "Eternal Punishment," but we don't have a release date on its English version yet. They've obviously been focusing on the more lucrative PS Vita version of Persona 4, which is understandable given that game's popularity.

I don't plan on making P1 and P2 overly massive factors in the game beyond Maki Sonomura being involved in the story and possibly having some hinted Nyarlathotep involvement. For the most part the story is going to be Katawa Shoujo centric.

I said I have no idea where I want to take it, but that doesn't mean I have no idea where it can go. I have several loose ideas of possible directions the story can go and I keep thinking of more ideas for it at odd moments. When you think about it, adding a dash of Persona to Katawa Shoujo isn't that big a stretch. The set-up is practically built-in. A transfer student arrives at a new school just in time to get wrapped up in a supernatural conflict that is deeply rooted in some form of psychological turmoil. Well, there's plenty of psychological turmoil at Yamaku Academy and Hisao is a transfer student... all that really needs to be added is the supernatural element.

To be honest, when I first wrote that I wasn't sure where I wanted to go with the story I was still at a point where I'd only finished one story path in KS, so it was more a matter of me holding my peace until I had a full understanding of the source material. I'm still unclear on it, but the fact that my muse is still churning out possible plots and twists is heartening.

I'm all for seeing this story bear fruit! I've been on a P4Golden binge for a while, and I think a crossover like this is long overdue. Seeing the Yamaku girls Shadows will be entertaining to put it lightly!

So how's the story progressing? You got a villain yet?
