It was actually a trade-off between the mech or a duel-environment (space and atmosphere) fighter aircraft. Much of what I put down was a mix of trade-off's like: officer or enlisted, space or land, etc. I'll take the independant company ship as a possible revision though. I'm just bringing this up...

20/180 vision or thereabouts without glasses(I forget exactly), and bad knees that give me intermittent pain (apparently the muscles/ligaments don't connect properly). Still pretty weaksauce compared to a lot of you.

Alexander becomes an E-suit pilot (a mecha capable of rapid space maneuvering). I really liked this up until this point - space-fighter-mechs are just horribly overdone, and they make no practical sense whatsoever. Yes, both of you are right in my opinion. Even the "comic relief" character is complex and tragic in his own way, and becomes a bit less comic.

As for the war setting, I suggest Soviets in WW2. They were pretty gender-mixed, at least with aircraft and tank crews (females tend to be smaller, thus more elbow room in the cabins).
