I failed Rin?!

I was hoping to make my first post on less of an impulse but this is really getting to me.
After completing the first 4 girls successfully (not sure about Hanako, that wasn't a totally happy ending) I decided to finally
give Rin a try. (SPOILERS) About halfway through, after Hisao spends the night at the atelier, he gets mad when Rin refuses
to acknowledge his feelings again and a 3-way decision pops up (I need to understand / then explain / it doesn't matter).
After choosing Then explain, it gets even worse and Hisao decides he can't get to Rin and just gives up. Credits.
I was SHOCKED! I mean, I thought that to completely fail a girl you had to make some obviously dumb decision or multiple
subpar ones in a row. This particular decision seemed like an important one, but I felt the first option sounded egoistical, and
the third was the wrong kind of attitude, an uncaring one. That left the second, which I hoped would lead
to Rin at least trying to explain even if she thought it wouldn't make sense. Was that naive?
I feel kind of silly asking for some sort of reassurance, but I worked so hard to get closer to Rin and
now it's all been for naught. Where did I go wrong?

I'm not going to tell you what to do right because that takes the sense of accomplishment put of it when you do succeed, but when you make a mistake, you need to go back over your choices and think about what they mean, not just from your own point of view, but from hers.
I'll give you this hint though, look at the last choice you made there. You told her to explain herself. Think about that for a minute.

Not naive so much as just...dense, maybe? You asked her to do the one thing she's told you repeatedly she can't do properly: express herself with words. Bad Hisao.

If the game just ended after Hisao went to see Hanako in her room, you got the neutral ending rather than the good one.

Dem feels, bro. Rin is Hard-mode, so don't feel bad. The choices on her path are deliberately deceptive, and I must shamefully admit that I fell for them. I too went trough both the bad and neutral ends first, before I got to the good one. Some of the choices simply feel too much like pure guess work, which I guess is in line with the path's theme, since you're not supposed to "get" Rin. But it felt so humiliating, since I managed to get all the other girl's good endings on my first go without any guides.

Well, most choices in Rin's path don't have any meaning anyway.
The only choices that are really important are the one you mentioned and the very last one. All the others are just a very complicated way to determine which of two scenes you get to see somewhen in Act... 3 I think.
I have another gripe with the choice you mentioned, but since you're not done with the path yet, I'll refrain from mentioning it here.

Wow
That's how it works? Ouch.
I figured the results of the decisions were based on the implication of your choice, but I didn't expect to get punished THAT severely...

For future use, going in blind I save before every choice, it works out ok.

Hey, at least you didn't get Rin's other bad ending.
It's a lot worse in the moment, though the one you got is the worst overall.

Metaphorical suicide?

Literal. Metaphorical is in her "neutral" end.

I too got the good endings for every route on the first try except for Rin. That one decision is pretty tricky. But luckily, I managed on the second try.

The decisions in Rin's route for me were not only hard in the sense that i honestly had no idea what the choices entailed (like OP i also lost my "all good endings in the first run" record with Rin) but in that, due to the thematics and dilemmas presented within it, i had honestly no idea of what my answer to those questions were.
A great part of what made Rin's route so significant for me was the fact that the route was constantly bringing up elements that i very rarely consider and which ended up forcing me to consider certain aspects of my personal philosophy.

I fell victim to this too. It hurt me a little. I know she can't use the right words but I personally would feel the same was as Hisao did, PO'd.
I guess my 3rd blind ending is this one...So, I had the manly picnic, then Emi's good end, now this. That makes 2 bad and 1 good.
BTW, it hurt a little to find Emi and Hisao not have any connection until I realized it was a completely new game/world
