Walking Forwards (tentative title)

This is a story I started on a while ago, but I put it on hold after an issue cropped up and then I decided to continue working on it after I thought that the issue wasn't that much of an issue.

I decided to go for a downtrodden personality (if I've gotten the wording correct) this time.

Some of this chapter might not have any basis in reality, but it should only be in this chapter.

Now all that is done with, it's time for the first chapter.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Beginnings

I looked out of the window of the taxi watching the scenery pass me by.

After everything I've been through, this trip to my new school is the most painless part.
Along with the scenery, a slight reflection of me is also visible.
Shuji Shirakawa, old enough to be in college or university, but only starting my final year at high school.
The only reason for this is due to the accident that robbed me of my lower legs, and more besides.
I started with going to a getting through our second year of high school party, and ended up coming to in the hospital with my legs amputated below the knee along with the news that any child wouldn't want to hear.
I shouldn't dwell on the past since there's no way to bring those that have been lost back to life.
There wasn't any time to think about it that much since the taxi has pulled up at it's final destination.
Yamaku Academy, a school primarily for people just like me, people who are disabled.

I got out of the taxi with the only item I'd brought with me, but it took me a little while to find my feet only because of these stupid prosthetics.
They had enough time to sort out the prosthetic for my left leg, but they only started work on the replacements last week with a promise that they'd be ready before I set off.
If they'd done their job properly and not just used my right leg which they had managed to save more of, then they wouldn't be in this position right now.
Now that the taxi had departed, the only direction I could head in was through the gate that was in front of me.
I limped in the direction of what I thought was the main building, looking at everything on the way.
After about five minutes limping, I finally arrived at my intended destination.

When I enter, a man with seemingly bad posture notices me which is to be expected since we're the only people standing here.
I also shouldn't be thinking about his posture considering how bad mine is... stupid leg.
"You must be... Shirakawa", the man asks while looking at something he's holding, which he probably used to remember my name.
I only nod in response since I wasn't in a talkative mood at the moment.
"I'm your homeroom and science teacher", he said "my name is Mutou".
We exchange handshakes after that introduction, which was a bit weak on my side since I used my right hand.
He then said that the head nurse asked me to check in with him, but should leave it until this afternoon since there wasn't time to do it now.
"We should get going and introduce you to the rest of the class", Mutou said "they're waiting already".
"Lets just get this over and done with", I said rather coldly.
I wasn't that interested in doing a self introduction since I wanted to get this year over and done with as quickly as possible.
Before Mutou could say or do anything else, two girls walked through the door and headed towards what I thought would be the classrooms.
When they spotted us, one of the girls who had blue hair and wore glasses took something from the other girl who had bubblegum pink hair styled in what looked like drills and walked over to where we were and placed the item in my left hand.
After she walked away I looked at the item, to find a key with a label attached to it with a three digit number written on it which must indicate the room I'll now be residing in.
"I thought that everyone was in class", Mutou said "I'd have to wonder why those two are late".
Since I just received a key from one of them, it would be clear to me that they just came from sorting out my room.

Once Mutou had gone through every conceivable idea, he started heading towards the stairs and I followed.
It was a bit of a pain getting up the three flights of stairs that led to the classroom, but I made it without falling back down them.
He entered the classroom, apologising for being late again which made me wonder if this is a regular occurrence for him.
I followed him in after he said that and looked at who I'd be calling my classmates for the next year.
A majority didn't seem to have any visual signs of disability, but as I looked over to the far end of the classroom I found the two girls that walked past a little while ago.
It would explain why he knew that they should be here.

Mutou started rambling on about something, but I wasn't paying too much attention to it until he said something along the lines of welcoming me and a silence descended over the class.
I didn't want to introduce myself since I just wanted to finish up what I should have started two years ago, and Mutou decided to continue on with my introduction.
Eventually it ended and I was directed to my seat, which was situated next to the window in the second row.
Once I'd taken my seat and had brought the books I needed out of my bag, the first lesson of the day started.
Everything that the teacher is saying and writing on the blackboard is new to me, since I hadn't gotten that far into the first time in getting through my third year because I walked out of my last school after one week.
I wrote down everything that was in the books along with what wasn't in them, so I could go over everything in the privacy of my own bedroom.
The chiming bells signalling the start of lunch took me by surprise as I was concentrating too much on what I was writing.
When I'd finished what I was writing, I started packing my stuff away and wondered where I was going to go for lunch until I noticed what looked like a shadow of one, or maybe two people covering the desk.
I looked over to see the two girls that walked passed me on their way here, but it might have been expected since I'm sitting next to them.

"So you must be the guy that got us out of bed at the crack of dawn", the pink haired girl said "I didn't think one person would bring that much stuff".
"I didn't ask for everything to be unpacked", I said "I could've done that myself".
There was a sudden silence, followed by a wailing laugh from the pink haired girl.
"We couldn't let the new guy go through all that on the first day", the pink haired girl said "you'll have more important things to do then unpack your things since you'll most likely be tired by the time you get there".
She does have a valid point since I was told before I started my journey that I had to report to the schools head nurse when I arrived, but since lessons were already going on when I arrived, I decided to leave it until the end of classes.
Although I didn't think that I would be that tired once I'd gotten to my room.

"You seem to be at a loss as to where to go", the pink haired girl said "the best place to be headed at this time would be the cafeteria".
"And you would know where that is", I said.
"Of course", the pink haired girl said "we couldn't really be students here if we didn't know where it was".
"Then lead the way", I said as I staggered to get to my feet.
I didn't really want to do this, but it gave me an opportunity to find out where the schools cafeteria is.

The two girls took the lead as we left the classroom and headed to the cafeteria, which was one floor below the lobby where I entered the building.
Almost everyone who was in the cafeteria looked at us as the pink haired girl announced that we'd arrived at the cafeteria, and she didn't seem to take much notice as to what she'd done.
We quickly moved to the counter and picked what we was going to eat, and headed to a vacant area of seating.
I started on what I had chosen, and quickly felt at home with the clinically bland hospital style food.

"So~, is there anything you need to know about", the pink haired girl asked.
"Nothing I can think of", I said rather bluntly "if there's a place I need to go that I don't know about, I'm sure that I could ask at that time".
"Are you sure~", the pink girl asked in her annoying sing song voice.
"Absolutely certain", I said in the same blunt but slightly harsher tone "I doubt there'll be many places that I'll be going in this school apart from the classroom, the head nurses office and my room in the dormitory".
"Is there anything you're interested in", the pink haired girl asked "we might be able to help you find the right clubs".
"I'm certain I'll be able to find them myself if I wanted to", I said with my blunt voice back in full force.
I think that I'd finally managed to end that line of questioning as they started talking between themselves, at least I think they were as there wasn't any talking just hand gestures.

We finished of our lunch and headed back to the classroom, but my lousy footwork came back to haunt me as I fell to the floor with a horrific thud.
There was a lot of panic one I'd hit the floor, but it didn't bother me that much as I checked that my prosthetic limbs hadn't slipped out of place and got back on my unstable feet
"Are you all right", the pink haired girl asked.
"Perfectly", I said maintaining my usual blunt tone.
I put an end to that line of conversation by continuing on to the classroom.
There were a few things that I didn't want to start talking about to others, with my legs coming at the top of that list.

With the remaining lessons for the day continuing apace, it gave me enough to stop thinking about what had happened during lunch.
Once the final bell rang, I knew that there was one thing I needed to do before I headed to my room in the male dormitory.
I started packing my things away, but I was distracted by the wailing voice to my right.
"Where are you heading now", the pink haired girl asked.
"The head nurses office", I said "I've got to go for my first check up".
"We can take you part of the way", the pink haired girl said "since we're heading near the auxiliary building".
So the next few minutes of my life would be in the company of the quietest girl I've ever met, alongside her megaphone of a friend.

It was only a few minutes since we parted company only a few hundred meters after we left the school building.
They did give me some directions to get from we parted to where I wanted to go, so it didn't take me that long to get to the correct office.
The muffled voice I heard when I knocked at least told me that someone was in the office, and as I opened the door, the man seemed to be expecting me.
"I thought that I'd be seeing you a bit sooner", the man said "after I heard that you fell down during lunch".
"It happens every once in a while", I said "since I got these".
"Then lets get this examination done with", the man said "and I'll check you over to see if you've done yourself a mischief from that tumble".
The examination of my legs started, but it didn't take long for the incorrect length of one of my prosthetic legs to be noticed by the nurse.
"Haven't they sorted this out yet", the nurse said as he examined my records "they've had enough time to get a new set sorted out for you".
"They did start on a new set to be ready before I came here", I said "but they didn't turn up in time".
"At least they decided to make a new set", the nurse said "I'll have to chase them up if they don't turn up in the next week or so".
The examination shifted to checking the rest of my body for any injuries from that unstable moment I had during lunch.
No injuries were found, and I was allowed to straighten myself out and head for the dormitories.

The walk was rather calming, since there wasn't that many people walking in the same direction.
It didn't take me that long to reach the dormitories, and once I'd entered the boys' dormitory, I started by getting the key I'd been given out of the pocket I had put it in.
A check of the label attached to the key told me that I was in room 209, so I headed for the stairs and the comfort of what would be my room for the next year.
To keep any unstable moments at bay, I made full use of the handrail as I ascended the stairs and eventually reached the second floor and my room.
The room was larger then I expected, and everything that had been sent ahead of me had been packed away which gave me more time to look around the room.

If there was one way I could describe this room, it would be something akin to a one room apartment since it had every amenity, apart from major cooking and washing facilities which are probably provided in other areas of the building.
One thing that did jump out at my was a large box placed on the bed, and as I opened it, it was clear why my replacement prosthetics hadn't turned up before today since they'd been sent here instead of being delivered to me directly.
They'd decided to make a pair instead of just the one that needed to be replaced, most likely because I'd said that the useful of the two limbs was a bit uncomfortable at times.
I decided to try them on now in case there was something was wrong with this set as well.

It felt good not to be imbalanced whilst standing or walking, and it probably meant that the occasional discomfort I felt on one side was because both limbs were the same length.
This is something that I'd have to get used to after being on an uneven keel for so long, but as I walked around something else caught my eye, and it was something that I was happy to see.
After all the time that had passed, I still hadn't recovered from losing my parents and that picture was just a reminder of that loss.
That was something I didn't want to see, and I was certain that I'd made it clear that I didn't want it to be displayed in the room.
As I went to pick it up, the tears started flowing.
It was another thing that always happens when I see that image of what was taken away from me, and I had to fight through the tears to find somewhere to put the picture.

Not to be rude at all, but don't you think maybe you should finish one of your other stories before starting a new one? And isn't this your fourth or fifth story that begins with your protagonist arriving at Yamaku?
Don't you ever get tired of writing the same thing?

Not going to lie, you really need to format your writing differently.

Let's see... the story starts with a guy showing up late for his first day of school well after the school year has started. He's met my Mutou, who tells him that he was supposed to see the nurse but there's no time for that so he'll have to do it later. He's personally escorted to class and then the introduction.

If I never see this exact opening done again in a story,I'd be happy. There's not even a reason given for him being late.

I did like how the school apparently has no problem giving his room key to other student's without even telling him or their teacher. I hope he didn't keep a diary and that all his underwear was clean otherwise Shizune has blackmail material on him to last her all year. I hope he's not too upset about his secret stash of cash and all the snacks he packed are missing.

I did state that this wasn't a new story since I started this story almost four months ago (just to be clear I started work on this just over a month before I started on a new life), but I decided to shelve it before I finished the first chapter because of one issue with the story (if you go through the minor character list then you'll know why I put a stop to writing this story) and decided to continue work on it so I had something to work on if I hit the writers block wall on one of the other stories I work on in the late night shift (facing my pains is the only story I'm working on during the day).

This is only the third story I'm working on that starts with the main character arriving at Yamaku since lost memories and a new life start before the main characters arrival, and searching for a certain someone represents a major detour from what I used to do for the entrance and introduction part.

I do have a few ideas for other stories, but they might just stay as ideas unless I decide to add a few more stories to the daytime writing section.
YourFavAnon wrote:Not going to lie, you really need to format your writing differently.
This was started after I had to get past the writing style I used in the first story I started working on, and the latter part of the first chapter (which I worked on in the past week) has shorter blocks of text in places (where I can do shorter blocks of text).

The thing is though, it doesn't matter when you started writing the story. What matters is that you chose to publish it now, so the fact of the matter is that you have four to five stories going on at the moment and none of them have been finished.
This is only the third story I'm working on that starts with the main character arriving at Yamaku since lost memories and a new life start before the main characters arrival, and searching for a certain someone represents a major detour from what I used to do for the entrance and introduction part.
I'll accept that. But even then, at least the latter of those stories still involves the same stale, tired scenes you've used so many times by now. If you eat a banana every day for a month, eating a strawberry right before will not make bananas suddenly taste good again.
This was started after I had to get past the writing style I used in the first story I started working on, and the latter part of the first chapter (which I worked on in the past week) has shorter blocks of text in places (where I can do shorter blocks of text).
If that's the case, why didn't you take the time to rewrite it using your current level of proficiency, rather than just throwing it out to the wild? Why would you deliberately publish a story that you knew was substandard?

Best goddamn analogy ever. Although bananas never taste good to me it still works.

I never said that the story was substandard, I said that I stopped working on it after I uncovered a fatal flaw in the main characters last name which clashed with the last name of one of the sub characters, but after thinking things over I thought that it would be a pain to try and make a change that would muck up one part of the story that was yet to be written (and since it would be unlikely that the other students would know the last name of the sub character in question, I decided to leave everything as it was).

Out of the five stories I'm working on, two have hit the writers block wall, two are still workable (meaning I can write another chapter or two without running into the wall) including this one and I've just managed to sort out the problems I was having with the continuation on my first story.
With my writing load increasing with work started on a sixth story that will be posted (there's another two that are in limbo because one is a sequel to my first story and the prologue to that won't be posted until the rest of the first story has been written, and the second is on the shelf since it's basically parts of my first story told from the viewpoints of some of the other characters and I didn't want to tread on the toes of others who have done the same thing with the actual games script), I'm going to work on a chapter of each in turn (or where lost memories is concerned since it has longer chapters, on as much of the current chapter as I can).

I've finally managed to get the second chapter written (things were going really slowly on the story I was working on, so I put it to one side and started on getting this story moving).

The third chapter will be a while since I want to get the other stories I've started and are on the evening writing shift moving, plus there's a bit of studying I've got to do for the start of chapter three since it contains a substantial dream sequence which requires a bit of recall to get some of it right.

And doing some refresher work for this chapter has burned another story idea into my head, so there might be another story to add to the group once I've got the time to start it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First Contact

A rhythmic beeping began to invade my ears, and I'm not sure where it was coming from or how to stop it.
It did at least pull me out of the unpleasant dream I was having, which was one that I hadn't had for almost a year or so.
I turned over in whatever it was I was in, and my outstretched hand somehow managed to find the noise maker and silenced it.
Suddenly wondering where I was, I opened my eyes and the scene that greeted me reminded me what had happened the day before.

This was now my second day at Yamaku, and nobody has yet had any reason to start calling me names.
It's not like anything like that would happen here since a majority of the students here would have some form of physical disability, but not exactly the same disability as I have.
My eyes suddenly become fixed onto the now silenced alarm clock, and the time showing in bright green told me that I had more than enough time to get ready and get to class.
Not wanting to think about things too much, I peeled the covers off my body and pulled up the legs of my pyjama bottoms to start with the first thing that I needed to do each morning.

My new prosthetic limbs were where I left them before I went to bed along with the socks I use to protect the ends of my limbs.
A little less fettling about then usual got the prosthetics into the correct position, and all I had to do was to get dressed, sort out the books I needed for today's lessons and head out for breakfast and then to get to the classroom well before lessons start.
With stability no longer an issue, getting onto my feet so I could get ready for the coming day wasn't as much of a hassle then it used to be.
Once I'd gotten dressed and gotten everything I needed into my bag, I locked my room up and headed for the cafeteria for breakfast.

After eating the rather unappetizing breakfast that was offered, I headed to the classroom most likely to be the first person there.
I was completely wrong about that as one person was already sitting in their seat, but I couldn't tell who it was beyond the long dark hair since the face was completely obscured by a book.
It didn't really bother me that much since my goal wasn't to fraternise with the other people in this class, so I took my seat and waited for the first class to start.
The remaining students started to file in just before the bell rang with the person who sits to my right making an attempt to bring the school down with her entrance, and around thirty seconds after the bell rang the teacher walked in to start the lesson.

There was a lot of commotion as everyone started moving around after the teacher said that we'd be doing group work, but I wasn't sure if I should just get on with the work on my own until I noticed the pink haired girl beckoning me to join their group.
I decided to go with the flow this time, and moved my desk over to where they were.
Silence fell over the class as everyone started on the assignment, but that didn't last that long.

"Has something happened", the pink haired girl asked.
"Why would you be asking that", I said keeping my attention on what I was doing.
"Because you looked different today", the pink haired girl said "I dunno, more stable".
Maybe because I'm using my new prosthetic limbs and that you didn't know what was in that package you left on my bed.
"That's none of your business", I said extremely bluntly.
"But you looked so different", the pink haired girl said "you wasn't limping when I saw you".
"I said that it was none of your concern", I said with an even more acidic tone to my voice.
"I was just wondering because", the pink haired girl started to say before I stopped her by slamming my hands onto the desk.
"I said that it was none of your business", I shouted "just stop asking and leave me alone".

I was angry with her, but not just for this reason since these two were the only ones who sorted out my room, and I gave explicit instructions for no pictures of my parents to be left out which these two just ignored.
As I moved my desk back to where it was before all this, I noticed that one person in the back row was standing up but she sat back down and attempted to hide her face when she'd noticed that I was looking at her.
She does look like the girl who was already in the classroom when I arrived, but I can't be one hundred percent certain since all I saw was the hair.

Silence returned to my world along with the rest of the class since the pink haired girl wasn't wailing like a siren.
When the bell rang to signal the start of lunch everyone started to either leave the classroom or arrange desks to eat in the classroom, but everyone who was still in the classroom seemed to be avoiding eye contact with me apart from the girl who was standing up during my outburst since she'd already left.
With nothing else keeping me in here for the duration of lunch, I decided to head for the cafeteria for what would probably be another unappetizing meal.

What was on offer in the cafeteria for lunch tasted even worse then what I had yesterday, and it made me think that I should put my limited culinary skills to some use from tomorrow onwards for breakfast and lunch.
I managed to get through the remains of what this place calls food, and headed back to the classroom.
Since I headed back well before the bell rang, I was the first of the departing students to return to the classroom.

The afternoons lessons didn't include any group work, but it wouldn't have mattered since I would have done it on my own.
There were several sighs of relief when the bell rang to signal the end of lessons for the day, and discussions started to turn to what certain people would be doing but I had decided to go looking for the library to see what it had available, and then I would head back to my room to see if there was anything I could use to make a half decent lunch for tomorrow.

As I hadn't been told where the library was since I didn't ask to begin with finding it would be my first task, so I decided to start my search on the second floor and plan my continued search there.
This task seemed to have started on the wrong foot since every room I went past didn't resemble a library, but as I started to decide to continue my search on the third floor I passed by another door that was situated in the centre of the floor which seemed to be what I was looking for.
Once I pushed the door open, I was greeted with the familiar sight of bookshelves as far as my eyes could see and probably more that I couldn't see.

Feeling a bit more at ease in the company of so much paper, I ventured into the library since it looked like there was no librarian sitting behind the counter.
I started with a walk around the bookshelves to see what was available before choosing anything, since I really wanted to know where everything was so I could come back for more when I'd finished with what I'd gotten as well as being able to avoid the books that are for those who have other specific disabilities.

The walk around was going well as I'd found a lot of books that I wanted to read along with where the large print and Braille books are located, but as I headed back to the entrance area to start picking up whatever books I could carry, I was stopped in my tracks as my right arm started heading backwards.
As I turned around to look at whoever had stopped me in my tracks, the first glimpse of the persons hair told me who it was.
It was the dark haired girl who I saw standing up in class after my outburst, and from the look on her face along with the way she was holding onto my right arm she wants to say something, but she's either unsure of what to say or can't muster the courage to say anything.
I don't even think she knows that I couldn't even tell that she was holding my right arm until I was stopped by that action.

"I thought I'd made myself clear in class", I said in the harshest tone I could muster "I don't want to have to repeat myself".
That had the desired effect as she let go of my arm, but instead of waiting to see if she did anything else in response to what I'd said, I just turned around and stormed out of the library.
None of that was why I came here, I only wanted to complete my mandatory education and continue on with my life.
Once I'd made my way through the maze that was the second floor and back to the stairs, I decided to head back to my room so I could go through the supply situation for breakfast, lunch and whatever else.

When I got back to my room, the first thing I started on after putting my bag down on the bed was to asses what I had in the way of supplies.
A look through all the storage areas told me that I had sufficient supplies for breakfast and dinner, but nothing that I could use for lunch which means that I'll have to see if there's a convenience store in the area that has anything I could use for lunch.
With all that sorted out, I returned to my bag and pulled out the homework that we'd been given during afternoon classes.
This would at least give me something to do between now and when I'll start doing dinner since I didn't get any books to read.
Maybe I should play a game after dinner since that should keep me occupied if I finish all the homework before dinner.

I guess you probably think you thought of a good reason why Hanako would try to approach a person as abrasive as your OC...

They're called "stump socks" for future information. Don't feel bad about not knowing that. The only reason I know it is because I grew up with an amputee.
"I thought I'd made myself clear in class", I said in the harshest tone I could muster "I don't want to have to repeat myself".
Well, if you wanted to write Hanako out of the story completely, you did a god job.

Unless somebody puts a gun at her head, I can't think of any reason at all she'd want to interact with him again after that. ... and frankly, I'm not too sure putting a gun at her head would work either.

I believe it's called assessing all the information you have and looking beyond some of it (his personality is pretty much a front to who he really is, and the outburst in class was made Hanako decide to approach him at the first opportunity although it goes wrong).

They're called "stump socks" for future information. Don't feel bad about not knowing that. The only reason I know it is because I grew up with an amputee.
I wasn't sure as to what they were called which is why I ended up going the long way around describing them.

Well, if you wanted to write Hanako out of the story completely, you did a god job.

Unless somebody puts a gun at her head, I can't think of any reason at all she'd want to interact with him again after that. ... and frankly, I'm not too sure putting a gun at her head would work either.
I have no plans on writing Hanako out of the story since she's the main interest in the story, and things between them will start changing around the end of the next chapter.

Maybe you should consider writing stories for girls other than Hanako. You don't seem to have a solid grasp on her character...

The responses of certain people in my Suzu fan fiction made me return to having Hanako as the main interest even though I have a story with a half completed chapter one in the works that has Misha as the main interest.

I'm just exploring some things that Hanako might consider doing given the correct conditions which is why I wrote that outburst into the story and had Hanako seconds away from leaving the classroom at the time.

Everything should start falling into place in the next few chapters (well I hope it does).
