Remember, she's not really all that great at chess at the beginning of her own route, and only gets serious about it once Hisao starts playing her (the scene where she checks out a book about advanced chess strategies from the library). Thus, in Shizune's route, where Hanako never forms that bond with Hisao, and thus never takes chess all that seriously, Hanako doesn't really have any "mad skills".

I do think she was always serious about it...Hanako's secretly pretty competitive, even though she's usually far too shy to show it. It's just she didn't really have a reason to develop her potential due to the fact that she's lacking people in her life to play against. The only person she plays it with is Lilly initially, who doesn't offer much challenge. Most people don't have the drive to develop their skills when they're already consistently winning and I guess the same is true with Hanako. When Hisao beats her during her Act 1 ending, she obtains a reason to brush up on her skills and starts reading books about it in order to get better. She was never bad at it though. While she loses the initial games against both Hisao and Shizune, both acknowledge it took them significant effort to beat her. Due to her solitary life, Hanako's "mad skills" are just an extremely dull knife that desperately needs to be sharpened.

Oh God no...I spend too much time already going through Lilly and Shizune's arc over and over again in the other board defending her (Shizune) with all my might, arguments, conclusions, analysis, etc...
Someone just link what we had discussed before to the other post about Shizune and Hanako's chess game. I was almost certain we'll be debating again like 'Team Shizune vs Team Lilly'.

...then again, it did gave me some incentive to reread Hanako's route and dig the crap out of every single obtainable information there are.

You know, in light of Hanako loving chess mostly as a means of getting to know other people, her decision to take it more seriously in her route is kinda charming.

She has Jigoro as a father and Hideaki as a brother. She can never truly be called a winner.

It was 2 and a half seconds after Misha translated that Shizune wants to make it interesting by stripping off a piece of clothing for each chess piece lost

It's kind of weird going back and playing KS now because every once in a while, I hear Chilled's voice reading the text in my head.
