A brilliant hint for the later reveal that this was in fact all a fantasy going on in Hanako's head while Hisao is shouting at her through the door to open for him.

I thought it was what Hisao was imagining while waiting for the door to open.

Either way.. The shadows are the hint that this isn't real, and therefore the events portrayed never happened.

I could see this happening in the bad ending. It would be even better if it was the hidden "worse than bad" ending, where you make all the wrong choices.
