First Try

My first try at writing, feel free to drop your suggestions and constructive criticism ^_^
I wake up a little too early for today. The sky was still dark and I can see the stars shining happily outside my window. It seems that I can't sleep anymore but I'm still lazy to get up, besides, it really is too early to prepare for school. I closed my eyes hoping to fall asleep again and started thinking about my new friends here at Yamaku. My thoughts wander from how I will maximize my time to accommodate all of them to feeling my heart as to whom among the girls I feel more romantically inclined.
Before it goes on further I noticed my morning wood. I forgot to ask the nurse if it is alright for me to 'exercise' once in a while, afterall I'm still at a stage of life where hormones run wild at the mere thought of a beautiful girl or girls at my case. Well, they may have their disabilities and deformities but they are beautiful in their own way.
Realizing that it is better to ask first than to risk the shame of having the world record for dying just by masturbating and probably have people laughing instead of weeping at my funeral, I decided to take advantage of the coldness of the early dawn to shower this desire off.
As I was about to get up, I heard loud banging noises on my door. I only know one person so socially inept as to make that noise in these early hours. My thoughts are proven right as I recognize the voice that shouts my name.
“Hisao, wake up!” Kenji yells.
“Hey, what do you think you’re doing? I’m sure you know that we all have different circadian rhythms, right?” I said to him with an irritated voice.
“Dude. Shit. Just. Got. Real.” He says full of suspense.
“What got real?”
“You are not going to believe this. I saw it with my own two eyes…” Kenji says as he pushes his thick glasses up.
I find it hard to keep a straight face when I heard him say that. He interrupted my thinking with his correction.
“Well, not my own eyes really but with my telescope. I was checking the area around the gates, when I saw this woman in some kind of an officer uniform plunge her teeth in the neck of Professor Mutou. He was totally caught off guard, I can see it in his face. Then she dragged him to the bushy part of the wall. That is where I lost sight of him. It was like a feminist vampire or zombie. And then I remembered the anime with hot and cute girls and two guys escaping their school before the whole town gets overrun by zombies, and then I realized that I am like the main guy, except that I don’t have and I WON’T have a feminist calling me stupid.” Kenji says with a tone half excited and half nervous.
“Don’t be silly, vampires or zombies don’t exist.” I brushed his story off easily. I guess speaking with him for a few times was enough to make my brain automatically tag what he says as nonsense.
“Dude, I saw what I saw. If you don’t believe me, follow me to check this shit for yourself. Wait for me here while I prepare my gears.” He says as he quickly run through his room.
I used this opportunity to do my daily morning rituals. Talking to him this early distracted me enough from the secondary reason I’m taking the shower.
As soon as I finished putting my uniform on, I heard him knocking again on the door.
“Dude, what is taking you so long? The world is going down while you are there jacking off!” he says impatiently.
I opened the door and I was surprised by his outfit. He is wearing a football helmet, skater’s knee and elbow guards, a motocross chest protector and a bag matching his military camo suit.
“Dude, what the fu-,“ I blurted out.
“Hey, I’m the one that’s supposed to say that! We are going to hunt down monsters and you are going with me with what? Your notes to smash their heads and pens to impale their heart? Dude you suck!” Kenji says angrily.
“I’m sorry I’m not as prepared as you so can we please start moving now?” I said sarcastically as I would like this charade to end quickly. It is a good thing that no one is around to see that I’m walking with Kenji. I don’t want them to think we share the same disability.
It didn’t take long for us to reach the area that Kenji supposedly saw Mutou being victimized by the feminist monster.
Kenji flashes his lights to the bushes as we approach it. The leaves rattle as we get near.
“Hey, I know you’re there! Show yourself!” Kenji shouts dramatically.
As I look around, I noticed a foot lying below the bush and I nervously point it out to Kenji.
I can see him freeze in fear as he finally realizes what he’s looking at.
The bush started moving again, this time we saw Mutou. His face is gray pale and his clothes and hair are disheveled. He just stood there looking at us for a long time. My heart is racing, this is bad. This is not a good time to have a heart attack. There was never a good time for a heart attack. I am shouting at myself to think! Think Hisao, think! My legs, I can’t move my legs. It’s as if my feet were stuck knee-deep in mud. Just as Mutou raised his arm towards us, that’s when I can’t stop myself from yelling.
“RUUNNNN!!!” I screamed as I dashed towards the dorm. Kenji quickly recovers from his fear and suddenly overtakes me.
As soon as we feel safe, we took a short break to catch our breath.
Still gasping for air, Kenji turns to me.
“I told you dude. I fucking told you. You lost your faith in me. You lost your goddamn faith in me.” He said to me dramatically.
Kenji continues, “We need weapons,”
“We need to get them out of here,” I said to him.
“What?” he asked looking surprised at my suggestion.
“The students dummy! They need to know the emergency we’re facing!” I said to him seriously.
“Woah! Wait! You’re telling me, that you are going to let everyone know that? Are you out of your mind? Did you ever for a second think that it will cause a wide spread panic in the school? And this is not an ordinary school Einstein, this is Yamaku, there are people here with special cases like panic attacks and heart problems and in case you forgot, you are one of them!” Kenji says with conviction.
I never felt defeated like this. Kenji was right. I wanted to point out to him that he was also one of those with panic attacks but it seemed futile. Wait a minute, speaking of panic attacks…
“Wait here Kenji, I’ll go get Hanako and Lilly.” I said to him as I hurriedly walk towards the female dorms.
It’s a good thing that the patrols are already gone when I got to the dorm. I suddenly realized how awkward my reason would sound like if ever I have to explain myself.
As I was going to their rooms, I found them along the hallway probably heading for class.
Now, how am I going to explain this without me looking like a schizo?
“Good morning Lilly, Hanako,” I said with my game face on.
“Oh my, Hisao, what are you doing here this early?” Lilly asked.
I better think of a good reason quickly.
“I was just about to escort the two of you to the classroom,” I instinctively said.
“I admire your chivalry Hisao, but I don’t want us to bother you this much,” she said with a weak smile.
“I-Is something wrong H-Hisao?” Hanako asked.
“None so far, shall we go then?” I said.
They both smiled at me and I take it as a cue.
“Ladies first.” I said. I seems that some of Lilly’s formality is rubbing on me or is it just because her formal tone makes me respond in the same way.
As we walk through the door, Kenji noticed me through his binoculars.
“Hey did you get some weapons?” he yelled.
“W-Weapons?” Hanako asked.
“Is there something wrong Hisao?” Lilly worriedly asked.
“I don’t have any weapons, besides, who would bring a weapon here at school?”
“GODDDAAAAMMIIITTT! What do you think you’re doing? Bringing them along without weapons? I thought you were smarter that the other guys here but you failed me man, you failed me.” He said furiously.
“Can you please explain to us what exactly is happening here Setou?” Lilly asked while Hanako hugs her arms tighter.
“There is a zombie outbreak about to happen to this school and soon the whole town. Professor Mutou is already infected and it will just be a matter of time before we'll be overrun by zombies!” Kenji exclaims.
“What?” Lilly says dumbfounded.
“We need a plan. We need to get somewhere safe. Before that we need transportation. I guess we’re going to ride a taxi. But where to? That’s it! To the nearest family first. Okay, whose family lives near here?” He totally ignored Lilly's reaction.
His look is filled with urgency that I suddenly answered, “My family lives in a city far away from here. I have no known relatives near the school that’s why I live in the dorm.”
“I-I lost my parents…” Hanako replied with such a sad look in her eyes. In times like this that I want to punch Kenji in the face for no reason at all.
“My uncle lives nearby...” Lilly said.
“Then it is settled, here’s your weapons,” Kenji interrupts as he grab some things from his bag. He handed me an empty bottle of whiskey and a telescope for Hanako.
“The fuck is this?”
“That’s your weapon and this is mine,” he said as he draws an aluminum bat from his bag. He smiles as he poses with his bat.
“I thought when you mean weapons you had guns.”
“Guns are overrated, we will just have to bash them in the head like a boss.” He said confidently.
If I am going to get killed, I would like to at least die with style. I suddenly remembered Lilly.
“What about Lilly?”
“She have a cane, with a sword in it. She’s better off than you,” he whispered to me.
“I heard that and I don’t have a sword in my cane, and aren’t we supposed to be heading for class?” Lilly said trying to divert this whole conversation back to normal standards.
“You can’t go back there. Once you’re in, it will be very hard for you to get out. Without getting bitten. Or alive.” Kenji said as he prepares himself to get to the back gate of the school.
“It’s on now, motherfuckers!” He yells as he run.
Although I would like to make sure that there really is a threat of a zombie apocalypse, a part of me thinks that it might be better to follow Kenji and not risk getting there stuck. Besides classes are only halfday today. It’s not like we’ll miss much.
“Come on,” I said to Lilly and Hanako.
They nod and we start walking fast to catch up to Kenji. Lilly will have it rough if we run and I still need to check on my heart and rest every chance I’ll get.
Just as we approach the gates, we saw Kenji standing there as if waiting for us. I was about to ask him what’s wrong when I saw two students shambling towards him.
Kenji tightens his hold of his baseball bat and he dashes to the two students and whacks them on the head like a kendo master, complete with a pose. The students dropped immediately and then Kenji resumes running.
“Run! Just run!” He yells.
As we chase him, I felt someone tugging at my shirt. It was Hanako.
“W-Why did he whacked those students?”
“They were shambling,” I said casually. I never knew those films would prove useful in real life.
“They were already zombies.”
“B-But they walk like that ever since I came to this school.”
That’s when I suddenly realized that maybe those students are not zombies at all and are just going to class. Damn, what if?
I catch up to Kenji and told him about what Hanako said.
“It’s a harsh world here man, there’s no time to check if they were infected or not,” He said pausing for breath.
“It’s either ‘them’ or me,” he continues.
“Dude, if they’re not zombies and we’re cau- no, you’re caught, you are so fucked!”
“Unlike you man, I don’t take chances.” He said easily dismissing the fact that he probably hurt or possibly killed two innocent schoolmates.
I am thinking which of the following sucks more; the oncoming zombie apocalypse or the fact that I’m stuck with Kenji while it lasts.
Then I suddenly realized what Lilly said earlier.
We are heading for someone who cannot possibly make it any worse.
