The impression I get is that the majority of the people that really enjoyed Kira Kira don't like Deardrops as much, whereas the ones that didn't like Kira Kira all that well prefer Deardrops. Looking back at it, Deardrops is basically a more serious and dramatic version of Kira Kira which focuses on the band more than the characters. I suppose that would appeal to a different kind of reader than the ones that played Kira Kira. In all honesty I didn't like Deardrops that much, but I can see why it is popular among some people. The Rimu and Yayoi routes were really disappointing though.
I've never played Kira Kira, so I wouldn't know. I looked at a few pictures but I couldn't get into it. The art is a big aspect for me and some of the art in Kira Kira just didn't suit my liking too well. I even waited a month to play Deardrops because the art hadn't grown on me yet. Could have done without the ero scenes though, I prefer the way KS handles those much better. Still, Its disappointing to hear that Rimu and Yayoi's parts weren't that great. I guess I'll just do Riho's route and call it a wrap.

njdfodw wrote:Hey, I'd like to play another vn, but internet searches were not much of help. I'd like one with a serious tone, and real, valid drama between characters. Like in Katawa Shoujo. I like the issues of mature life, cheating, getting a job, defects of marriage, leading double lives, dealing with disabilities, competition, jobs that require a lifestyle (stripper, spy, firefighter, ...) and so on. Got any recommendations?
ef - a fairy tale of the two (which I have already recommended in this thread) is another VN which deals with a lot of these issues. The VN is separated into chapters, and each one will deal with a different aspect with different characters. There are even two chapters based around disabilities. Chapters 3-7 fit your description pretty well. ef is a drama, thriller, romance, comedy and perhaps even mystery VN, and unlike a lot of VNs with a similar settings the characters are pretty mature. Perhaps not the first one to recommend to newbies, but I would highly recommend it as it is absolutely fantastic. Translation gets a fair bit of criticism, but I thought it was quite good.

So personally I would recommend ef. Still I'm no expert, perhaps someone else will come up with a better idea.

This bloody thing......is a friggin FEELBOMB. I played the VN after watching the 2 anime adaptations. It was so bad wait I mean so good er I mean my reaction was bad but the game was good but my reaction wasn't bad as in bad bad but good bad cause it felt so bad so sick and if something can make you feel that it's good isn't it?

Now tell me, does anyone else want something like that happening to KS? KS being carnival-phantasm-ed would be pretty darn hilarious I believe :)

Oh my good Jesus Christ God that would be amazing.

...I suppose I should finish both Tsukihime and F/SN before watching Carnival Phantasm, though. Damn, I have to speed up.

Finished Clannad and I recommend it especially with the new translations coming in from Doki fansubs.
Currently waiting for the Tomoyo After translations which is coming out on July 20th http://doki.co/2011/04/27/dokis-visual- ... oyo-after/
Progressing through Kanon and have Little Busters waiting right now

Note: I am a Key fan as you can tell from the VNs above.

Thanks for the mature recommendations, people! I've seen ef and clannad in anime, and loved them both, and I will also look into the other ones that you've mentioned.

I dunno how many times I can recommend this before people kick me out of here, but I just HAVE to do it for a second time.

マジこい! まじこい!! MAJIKOI!!! (Hint: Click the link to know stuff like plot and characters. :P )

But seriously, it's awesome. I just managed to get through all of the currently translated content. (This VN is sadly currently being translated at a snail's pace due to the translator being occupied with more important matters. However, the currently available routes, 4/6 main routes, are pretty much standalone and can easily be enjoyed by themselves. Latest patch: Click here.)

However, here's the most impressive factor of this VN. Almost all high rated VNs on VNDB have those scores thanks to highly depressing/saddening emotional scenes that grip the reader. But Majikoi never relies on saddening the reader. Instead, it makes the reader smile. I literally couldn't stop having a goofy smile on my face through the majority of it. This is like the only top rated VN that doesn't depend on making the reader cry. It does have a couple of very nice emotional moments, but those are moments where you feel warm and fluffy inside. Very very few outright sad moments. Yet it is great. A healthy dose of comedy and a healthy dose of its main theme of "friendship" balanced really well. This is a VN that just SHOULDN'T BE MISSED. :D :D :D

(PS. Not for you if you are someone who can only enjoy a story that makes you cry. :P )

Sounds awesome, added to my list. Thanks!

By the way, can anyone recommend Eien no Aselia? I stumbled across it on the database, and it looks pretty awesome. To be honest the cover is what really caught my eye. Except the thing is that I honestly can't recall anyone mentioning it in this thread. Is there anyone who's played it, or at the very least heard something about its quality?

Also, Hanachirasu. Any opinions on those two would be appreciated.

I was tempted to try this one, but that one untranslated route put me off playing it. I get that it is a comedy orientated, but is it like a slice of life comedy or a more wacky and zany comedy? Also is it a typical high school romance type thing? Nevertheless as soon as soon as the final route is translated I will be playing this, looks great!
acewing905 wrote:This is like the only top rated VN that doesn't depend on making the reader cry.
I don't agree with that. On the first page I see two of the Phoenix Wright games, Hoshizora no Memoria and True Remembrance, none of which are designed to make the player cry.

It's more towards wacky than slice of life. But can be considered slice of life as well. And again, high school romance kinda, but not at all typical. Oh, and there are two more main routes to be translated, btw. Not one. Miyako's route, and the "true" route that unlocks when you complete all five main routes. For both to be done, however, you'll have to wait a long time. The currently translated four main routes can be considered standalone, and don't depend on the fifth one. It's not like a partial translation that would leave you hanging at a crucial point in the story. The main five routes are pretty much five separate stories. So I'd say go for it.

Sorry, I didn't count the Phoenix Wright games as they're pretty much adventure games rather than VNs. (The VNDB admin yorhel seems to agree with this opinion, btw. He just keeps them in due to "popular demand", it seems.)
Haven't tried Hoshizora no Memoria, but from what I've read about it, I guess you're right. But I'd disagree about True Remembrance. By "making reader cry", however, I didn't mean downright depressing. I meant something like opposite-of-light-hearted-and-fluffy. Of course, this all depends on opinion, I guess.

:D I doubt you'd be disappointed. It's hard to be disappointed by something like this. ;)

True Remembrance and Hoshizora are designed to make you feel emotions and by extension, cry. The translation of a Nakige is crying game.

Not really the Phoenix Wright games although they are good in a different sense.

Oh, if you guys are curious, the Rewrite common route patch is out although I get the feeling that most of you are still working on your backlogs. It's a Key game, so it's bound to be good, but it's not very Key-like as this video will warn you. I have the feeling that it'll be my favorite Key game though I'm one of those weird people who like Little Busters more than Clannad.

Great, that sounds very enjoyable. A huge shame that there are two untranslated routes, I will probably just play it after Miyako's is done as a result.

I'll agree with you on True Remembrance, after thinking about it there were some potentially cry worthy scenes towards the end, but how does Hoshizora make you cry? The reason I liked that one as much as I did was because it doesn't make you emotional, unless you count already broken telescopes becoming slightly more broken and then being fixed again as nakige material. Matter of opinion I suppose, but I certainly wouldn't call it a nakige.

I've heard that the common route in that VN is really damn long. Considering the full patch could be out in a few months, it may be worth trying that if you are a slow paced VN reader.

Amaterasu blog has a warning that it drops you off at a "slightly evil" place in the story, btw. One reason why I won't be touching this until a full patch comes out, unlike in the case of Majikoi.

That's reasonable. Amaterasu is fast, so when they say that they'll have a VN done by October, it'll be done by October.

Mysterious Stranger: Eien no Aselia is a gameplay-based product. If you like the idea of playing tactical battles to advance through the plot, you'll like it. If you don't, you won't.
I went through it once, but was so turned off by the idea of having to loop-replay it many times to complete it that I never touched it again. Your mileage may vary.
Also, and fairly oddly, the removal of the usual sex scenes from the VN left a few potholes in the plot. I imagine the porn would have been as dire as always, but the hack job isn't very inspiring either.

Hanachirasu is a 100% classic, standard VN instead (the first time around, at least). While it gets very faux-technical about faux-swordfighting techniques at times, it never got to the point of boring me - and I found the plot twists (more like U-turns) to be worth the wait.
It's not a progressive, daring piece of writing by any means, but I recommend it.
