The story isn't as good as, say, Ever17's, the feels aren't as strong as the ones in KS or anything by Key, and it isn't really on the level of craziness that Saya no Uta is. Add to that the fact that there are pretty much no choices, and it ends up being more like reading a novel. A pretty good novel, but not an amazing one.
Also because of the 3D segments of the game, which my netbook is for some reason incapable of running, I was forced to read it all at home, rather than being able to read it anywhere, like I'd read all other VNs except KS.
Alright then, gonna be doing Narcissu next.
From what I've heard, it's better than canned bread.

Well, maybe it just wasn't my cup of tea.

It actually seems pretty good so far, though I don't know where the hell the story is going. I really want to go back and play it, because it is great, but in a way, it's as boring as it is interesting, and I feel myself torn between saying it's one of the best VN's I've read since KS, or saying it's absolute shit.

Oh, crap, you meant Narcissu... *facepalm*
Somehow I read that as referring to Chaos;Head.
Yeah, I've heard good things about it here and in a few other places, and apparently it is one that you either love or you hate.

Well, then I'm kind of stuck in the middle.
I guess I gotta finish it to have a decent opinion. Lots to do this break.

So, I downloaded Scarred and went through it earlier (
in about 2 hours, it's pretty short). Was pretty good
Plan on starting Narcissu tomorrow at some point

Let me guess, you hated the last few chapters of it? Most people seem to say that because
it drops the whole horror feel and goes all F/SN with chuuni and powerlevels. Personally I thought it was great, but it seems to be the one that people call the most "disappointing".

It's a shame, because it was the minor things like that which I thought it was so good. That and sacrificing the soundtrack for sound effects (the clattering of the keyboard or whir of Taku's computer for example) were nice little touches.
Reading VNs on the go must be awkward though, what if someone catches you in a porn scene?

It isn't that popular. There is a reason it's ranked 77 on VNDB.

That's still a pretty good number, if you think about how many VN's exist.
What is 1?

You're pretty much guaranteed a good VN if you choose anything from the top 100. Here is the VNDB list by rating, and excluding any without English translation:
http://vndb.org/v/all?q=;fil=tagspoil-1 ... d;s=rating
The one at the top is
Muv-Luv Alternative by a pretty large margin. It was pretty good.

Huh, Clannad and Steins Gate are 3 and 2, respectively.
I guess I gotta hit those eventually, especially since I hear so much about them on these forums.

It wasn't even that, it
transitioned rather nicely from more horror-oriented to more sort of action-oriented. It was just that while it was overall well done, nothing really stood out. Perhaps I'm just really spoiled by the VNs that I've read before it.

That certainly did stand out, and while it was a bit jarring to not have a soundtrack playing through the whole thing at the start, it worked well with the theme.

Well, for starters I check whether or not a VN has H-scenes first, just to know how careful I should be. Also most VNs give ample warning about incoming H-scenes, so if I think that it's possible for someone to peek over my shoulder, I call it quits for a while, until I can be sure I am safe. And if I miss the warnings, alt-tab come to the rescue.
And I overall try to pick places where people can't see my screen, e.g. the back row of the bus. But if someone does take a peek at the wrong time, I just man the fuck up and stare right back at them.
Not really, but it would be awesome if I could do that...

Something I've learnt from the few VNs I've read, is that no matter how unappealing a VN might seem to your personal tastes, if it's ranked high on VNDB or people generally praise it a lot, it's pretty much bound to be good.

Pretty much. If so many people liked it, then chances are so will you. Also descriptions can be misleading, whether to not give away spoilers, or just unintentionally. For example when I read VNDB's description of Fate/Stay Night it seemed like a fighter anime (which I don't really like) wrapped in a VN, with a crappy premise at that. And while it did turn out to be related to fighter animes, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Unrelated but I downloaded Muv-Luv. :3
