I did get the feeling that Rin was kind of distant in her route though. I still believed that she truly cared for Hisao, but she didn't let a relationship with him get in the way of an art career. I think they settled their problems quite beautifully at the end of their story though.
Rin was distant, or rather is distant. That is her way, how she is. It took a while for Hisao to figure this out, that even though Rin doesn't show it in the expected ways, that she did love him. The good ending is so beautiful, when they both realize what they are and can be for each other. When Hisao lets Rin be herself, and Rin learns it's ok to be herself.
Many many tears.

Hisao is just a dumbass, and Nomiya an asshole
I think it's kinda hard to blame Hisao for thinking Rin might not like him at points in the story... Although Hisao was being kinda "clingy" perhaps? The whole time he was like TELL ME YOU LOVE ME!!!! and Rin was like "we're friends" and then Hisao was like NOOO TELL ME YOU LOVE ME FOREVER!!! and Rin was like o_o overwhelmed

Uhhh... I guess it could be put that way... maybe...

I don't think anyone is to blame in the Hisao x Rin relationship. They both have things they need to worry about, and they shouldn't be bothered by it. Just let them be.

The only person I blame is Nomiya for being the biggest asshat of asshats.

The thing is that I don't think Rin has ever had a real friend. Yeah she has Emi but really how often do you see Emi in her route? I don't doubt that Emi considers Rin her friend, or that Rin feels the same way to her, but it became immediately apparent to me that Rin feels differently towards Hisao than she does to Emi. I feel like their friendship was born out of necessity, being neighbors in the dorm and helping each other get dressed in the morning.
Rin divulges her innermost fears and troubles to Hisao pretty early "I feel like I'm underwater," "Change is the scariest thing in the world to me," she may have told these things to Emi, but my point is, I feel like Rin has never had someone want to be her friend just because they like her as a person. I think Hisao might have been the first male to ever show an interest in Rin herself and want to be her friend because of that and not because of her apparent talent with painting.
The term "friends" is different to Rin than to everyone else. Like when Hisao asks "I want to be more than friends," Rin responds with, "What's more, this is all I am, I don't understand that." So I think that friendship to Rin encompasses more than what the normal person thinks. Rin obviously feels towards Hisao in the "more than friends" aspect when she tells him about her fears, and when she asks him to help her finish masterbating. She does love him, and considers him her friend, when she has nearly none.

Dude when she said that I was like OMG it totally is scary

That was one of the most serious things she says... that and when she has her period at the festival

I think that nearly everything she says is serious, it just doesn't immediately seem that way to some people.

It's stated in her route that that isn't really the case...

What that Emi doesn't consider Rin her friend, or that Rin doesn't consider Emi her friend?

Well, they say that they aren't really friends, but Emi helps Rin in her dressing. More importantly, they hang out with each other despite Emi not understanding Rin. And we all know that Emi has issues with closeness.

I forget which. But their "friendship" is largely a matter of convenience. Rin needs help getting dressed and such, Emi needs company that won't try to have a close relationship with her.

Pretty much sums up their relationship, though I like to believe that they go back in some ways. They have to have some sort of history if they spend that much time together.

That's what I was getting at, a friendship born out of necessity, rather then genuine interest. But they do enjoy each other's company, at least somewhat

Rin does seem interested in Emi when she is at her Emi-est.

Emi is one year older because of her accident, and we're not sure when she or Rin got into Yamaku.

There is a saying in Mandarin: "Friendship between gentlemen are as plain as water." So, a plain friendship is not bad in my books.
