I predict that she is in fact bitten, and that Hanako will have to bash her head in with a lead pipe at some point :D
Maybe some other time. She's fine, hanako read enough zombie horror stories to know that there's no point in treating zombie bites
 You're no fun comrade!

Or maybe I'm just a twisted weirdo with a squirrel obsession...

You fool! That's rule #13 of zombies AU's, nobody can have previous knowledge of zombies.

Of course you can.
You just need to have paid a bit of attention in science class.
Favourite line:
...if we look at zombies as a species, they are pretty much designed for failure. Their main form of reproduction is also their only source of food and their top predator. If they want to eat or reproduce, they have to go toe to toe with their number one predator every single time.
That's why I think all zombie stories are quite silly...

I dislike the idea that zombies, who are in pretty much all cases stupider versions of normal humans, somehow end up being the better survivalists in our world. I mean excuse me Mr. Zombie but just because you don't care about pain and hunger that still doesn't mean that your missing right leg doesn't cause your death—in this case meaning non-functioning body—eventually.
But hey, apparently all those viruses and whatnot contain 95% magic which provides the Zombies with immortality or s.th.

This kind of magic-logic I just somehow cannot overlook much in zombie flicks. Even if I tell myself to just disregard it, that principle is still so stupid.

Now I'm neither a zombie movie nor novel/comic expert, but "24 Days later" is one of the few zombie/virus/infection movies I ever really enjoyed. And I really appreciated it that those who were infected actually died after a couple weeks. A pity the sequel was utter shit—different director of course.

In regards to this fanfic, so far so good I suppose. I mean the Kenji being the guy for these jobs is kind of a KS fanfic trope by now but I can still enjoy it if it's done well. I can see myself enjoying following the KS characters in a zombie scenario, depends on execution.

The only time I've ever seen this make sense is in The Walking Dead:
Airborne virus that infects everyone, but our immune systems are able to prevent it from taking over. The only way they can be taken over is if our immune systems stop working- i.e. if you die. Since your body can't fight the virus anymore, it takes over, reactivates parts of your brain and boom, zombie. And I guess the virus in a zombie's bodily fluids (for example, blood and saliva) is more powerful than the airborne type, so it's lethal (whether or not it overtakes your brain directly or if it just kills you through over means and then takes over your brain, remains to be seen but doesn't really matter, as both reach the same end result).
And they also have to have various body systems working at least to some extent if they're able to survive for more than 12 hours...

So they have to die for the virus to kick in and then the virus restarts the bodily functions?
And you say this makes sense?

Would make a bit more sense this way(imo) the virus already lives in them and is functional, but it can't overpower the human consciousness, however when they die and that "spark" that runs the body is no longer in control, the zombie virus can take over functions. Obviously it's not exactly possible to come up with a perfectly logical explanation for zombies(undead) existing, but don't let that ruin the magic for you.

Well, magic is a valid explanation for zombies...

I've personally always been partial to the "we don't know what the heck causes it or how it works, but it makes dead people want to eat living people," explanation.

I believe there is a fungus that takes control over ants and kills them, then the ant's dead body is used as a means of reproduction of self and spores.

This is probably the closest thing you could get to a plausible draw for a backstory, but zombies never really did make sense to begin with.

Cordyceps. I think its the plot for "the last of us"
For now, just assume that the outbreak is a punishment from god for someone being late on the monthly sacrifice

I go for Occam's Razor here. That is, the zombie virus is simply a rabies variant that also causes gangrene, and "undeath" isn't actually occurring.

Found it:
Clicky
It's the inspiration for the game "The Last of Us" I believe, I think it's my favorite possibility for zombies.
Still doesn't discredit this though

That works too, if you want to be boring.
