I always figured that she was mute because she was deaf (from birth). I may be mistaken, but I thought she was capable of making noises, but they'd sound like the cries of a cow undergoing castration, so she chooses (quite wisely) not to make any.

I'm also in the camp that she chooses not to speak instead of flat out not being able to. How else would we hear her moans of pleasure? Anyway, I think that some deaf people learn some level of speaking. In order to communicate with people who don't know sign language. But they can only do so much with learning lip movements and other things. Without being able to hear their vocalizations, they can't regulate anything, even though it will still be recognized as a spoken word, it will be heavily distorted. I think they are aware of this and choose not to vocalize if they don't have to. Since Shizune was deaf from birth, she has no auditory index of what sounds sound like. Referring to her 'moans of pleasure', I think those too would sound off, as she would have no reference of what they are supposed to sound like. She'll just let whatever out.

Instinctive sounds aren't "supposed to sound like" anything. They are inherently not consciously regulated. Furthermore, Shizune would have a pretty bad vocal influence if she tried to copy others...If she weren't deaf, it'd be a lot more creepy if she tried to mimic Misha's sex sounds after listening to the latter through the dorm walls.

(C'mon, we all know Misha probably gets laid a lot more than Shizune.)

Actually I think she can run in the Olympics now. What was the judgement on that Pistorious guy? I heard at the last moment they said he could but he failed to meet the qualifying time for the event he wanted to be in.
