Sad, but not as heartbreaking as I expected. At least I understand her a little bit better now.
Word of god says Rin's neutral ending is technically the worst. Hint, it involves Rin's well-being
I write take a look, would you kindly?
I also draw, kind of.

Word of God is only applicable in matters of canon, not interpretation. :P Rin's well-being is worse off in the bad end. The neutral one is just sadder.

Just finished the good ending. Oh my, thats going to take some time to sink in.

Its funny. Hanako feels like she needs to be taken care of, but really doesn't. Rin acts like she doesn't need anyone, but shes really the most vulnerable of all.

My only gripe at the ending? Hey Hisao! Tell her you love her you dumbass!

Why should he do that? That would only complicate things. Rin doesn't need that. And given Rin's difficulty with words, actions would probably work best with her anyway. And Rin doesn't act like she doesn't need anyone. Emi does.

You're probably right. Thats just me failing at "reading" characters again. :(

But really, if Rin was able to come out and say she loved him, it wouldn't have hurt him to say more than a half-assed "I'm not sure".

If he was unsure, what more could he say? And once he was sure...Why say it? He could just as easily show it or she could have figured it out already, making the words redundant.

Essentially, when words are not needed, waste no words. Few people ever seem to follow this simple instruction. Too many people insist on inane, empty, uninteresting words that exist only to fill a silence. It's called "small talk" by many and can serve a good purpose but more often than not, it's just useless. In a worthwhile relationship (romantic or otherwise), the mere presence of company should and can suffice. And that's just what Rin needed. She didn't need someone to spout some trite little phrase of confession. She just needed someone to be there.

Incidentally, I hate small talk. Meaningless, forced, and generally just a bothersome formality where no actual conversation can occur. People with nothing in common use it. People who don't really give a damn for the company use it. It sucks. Especially "How are you?" - I'm fine. Same as always. My life isn't so erratic that my disposition changes radically each day. I'm always pretty much "fine". What conversation can come of that? None. Useless words are wasted words.

In short: Rin didn't need to hear it so Hisao didn't say it.

This doesn't work for everyone. For some people if not many, words can be the make or break of their confidence in the other person's feelings. Have you ever read the book on the five love languages? I did. Not that it really applies to Hisao and Rin for what I'm trying to say, but still, I'm just making a general point based purely on what you said. For some people, it really does matter.

The "How are you" question needs the answers to go with it. There are people who are like Lily: you have to tell them what you feel. Of course, with people who you can tell don't care very much about the company, you can (and should) tell them to bugger off in a polite manner.

For me personally, I speak only when I have a point to make.

But we're not talking about everyone. We're talking about Rin. Sure, some need the words. I'm aware of that. But Rin isn't among them. :P

@YZQ: But the answer is usually just a word or two. It's a vague question suited for vague answers. Now, if it's followed up with better questions or a request for elaboration, then something might come of it. But even then, how is one expected to elaborate on "I'm fine."? - It really has no room for explanation. Now, something like "I'm depressed as hell." generally can have a story behind it but...Well, it's just a shitty question otherwise.

I actually do expect people to avoid the "I'm fine" line, if they are REALLY not ok. On the other hand, my replies are usually "I'm good. Nothing unusual has happened out of my norm."

That's the reply the majority of the time. That's why it's a shitty question for actual conversation. Now, if you asked Rin, she'd go off on some weird tangent or something...

"How are you?" isn't used so much for conversation. It's a phrase indicating recognition and consideration. Well, unless they are just trying to appear polite or desperately free themselves from the "despair" of silence.

At any rate, that question to me can be answered beyond simply stating the current state of emotions (though of course, there are times where you can say something with that, regardless of your history of answering that question, and it's not like people are empaths and know what is going in your mind). For example, because the question is indeed vague, one can easily answer by mentioning things are on your mind, or talk about what you are doing. That all lies within the usual interpretations of "How are you?".

I've been pondering Rin's animated cinematic. In the beginning it show Hisao picking up a dandelion, then it shows Rin sleeping in her bed. They both appear to be in some "sky-realm". Then it shows Rin painting, then it looks like she is dozing off and the entire scene switches to a kind of abstract interpretation. It then shows that the picture Rin was painting was a self portrait, which then tilts its head and blinks. The cinematic then switches back to the "Sky-Realm" and it show Hisao's lower half of his head and what looks like to be a grimace. He then proceeds to shake the dandelion, which since has bloomed, this sends the seeds floating off into Rin's direction. One lands on her face, which awakens her from her sleep, she then sits up and looks behind her, her cloudy eyes then dart around as if looking for something. Hisao is nowhere to be found.
I've been watching this cinematic repeatedly for a long time, as if to gain some understanding to all the symbolism it portrays, but I can't help but feel conflicted as to what I have discerned from it.
Here is my take.
The dandelion is something that takes place in Rin's story, Rin and Hisao visit a dandelion field twice(?) during the story, first when they have yet to bloom, and again when they have. Although they only visit the bloomed dandelions in the good ending. I have not determined what the dandelion could mean symbolically in the cinematic. The same goes for the sky, as it too is often mentioned during the storyline. The "Sky-realm" could have many meanings and I don't really know which one I should apply.
When Rin paints and everything goes abstract. I think the abstract-ness might represent her thoughts, and she is painting to try to get them out. Yet when she looks at her finished painting it is merely a reflection of herself. I think this symbolically represents Rin's pursuit in understanding herself, even though her thoughts may be different every moment, and hard to understand, in the end they will always be a reflection of her self. "I change every day, but I'm still me every day. So who am I then?"
I think the grimace on Hisao's face represents his frustration in trying to understand Rin, but I am unsure of the meaning behind him shaking the dandelion.
When the dandelion seed lands on Rin's face she wakes up and looks around, but then Hisao is gone. This is the part that troubles me. Maybe the dandelion represents the good ending, and when it lands on Rin she wakes up, with no Hisao, as if it were all a dream. The final act in her story line is called dream, could this potentially mean that the good ending might have been just a dream? If so why is Rin still in the "Sky-realm" when she wakes up?
I'm probably over-analyzing this whole, as I am prone to doing. I would like to hear other peoples thoughts and takes on this, in the attempt that someone might give me hope that I am just over-analyzing and that the good ending wasn't just a figment of Rin's imagination.
