I think that's a borderline verbal (or thought) tic for him.

My favorite was his thought "I wonder if people discussing in sign language ever accidentally poke each other in the eyes." I was dying after that. I actually got a text from my dad telling me to keep quiet since it was 11:30 at the time though

The context of the quote is awesome. Much more so if you believe that Rin knew what was going on, but chose to use her usual persona to cover that up.
