Is Hoshimemo really that good? Back in 2009 when the VN translation scene was just taking off, people were saying it was okay at best. I do plan on reading it, it's just not one of my priorities.
A lot of people like it. While the translation is iffy, I would give it an 8/10. How much you like it depends largely on how much you like moe and cutesy slice of life mixed with some drama. While it's certainly not the best out there and can be stalled for stuff like Stein's Gate, it's pretty good. The translation has a couple of memes though, so whether or not you can tolerate that is up to you.

Out of curiosity, where on the chart would you place each of those, respectively?

Sounds like good news. To be fair, the discussions I read back in 2009 were about which VNs should get translation projects, when the number of translators available were much less than now, and Hoshimemo had some ridiculous competition with titles such as Muv-Luv Alternative, Baldr Sky and Liar-Soft VNs.
Mmm, crispy!

Quartett is short and sweet, so I could jam it in with the beginner VNs. The story, while not all that great, has a god-tier presentation and is like an interactive manga. The epilogue that you get after you complete the routes is very heartwarming. Also, it's best to play Charlotte's route last. It's 2-10hrs and would have tags of school life, Romance, and comedy.

Princess Waltz could also be a beginner VN since it's only 10-30hrs and like a shounen anime. I like it for it's overall light-heartedness and wackiness with some drama. The story was fun to play through IMO, though that may be nostalgia filter getting to me. Action, gameplay, comedy, and school life tags.

Hoshizora no Memoria would be in the green area since it's so long. I like it, but that's probably because I am tolerant towards moe characters and like slice of life. It had some genuinely good tear jerking and heart-warming moments although it did pull an asspull once in a while. Comedy, drama, romance, and school life tags.

Deardrops is everything you could want from a musical VN that relies on the power of rock. It has some drama, but it's mostly band slice of life with some awesome concert scenes. The VN is about medium length, but the main route is quite long. It's better to play Kira Kira first, so you can catch the cameos, though. Comedy, romance tags

I haven't played all the VNs on the chart, but if you want my personal ratings of the VNs I did play, here you go. Oh, for some reason, I don't like giving scores of 10. I'm not sure why, I just don't. I gave my favorite VN, Muv Luv Alternative, 9.2, but that's because I'm REALLY biased for mecha and completely ignored the blatant pacing issues and ridiculous length.

No wonder it was called mediocre. It's hard to compare to MLA. I'm personally looking forward to Baldr Sky myself.

Oh wow, thanks for that. I'll go ahead and bookmark your votes page. Also added Hoshizora and Deardrops to my ever-expanding list. I was actually thinking of Kira Kira for my third VN - either that, Sengoku Rance, or Shuffle!

...though of course, I'm getting ahead of myself. Princess Waltz for the time being.

Gah, looking through this GIANT list of VNs to try makes me dizzy. I've already read KS (Obviously) and I finished Saya no Uta (Which I thought was amazing, to the point where the H-scenes kinda ruined it a bit, even with the themes implied in it).

Right now, I'm leaning towards Fate/Stay Night as my next VN, but what else would be a good place to start?

Jeez, I feel like I'm crossing the point of no return with this VN stuff D:

I actually thought about making F/SN my second VN, but I ended up deciding against it - it's a really dense read, from what I can gather from both online sources (this thread and elsewhere) as well as from playing through the first couple scenes. However, I was told Princess Waltz was quite similar but much more light-hearted in tone (in addition to being about 20 hours shorter, if I'm not mistaken), so I went ahead with that instead.

And yes, I myself am well beyond the visual novel Event Horizon (KATAWA SHOUJO SCENE NAME DROP EXTREME!!)

Well, if you want something longer, but not as insanely long, I would recommend Demonbane. It's a fun action/comedy mecha VN. Basically what would happen if you put Lovecraft in a blender, and added giant robots. IT'S AWESOME!! Princess Waltz is also recommendable.

There aren't a lot of actiony VNs like Fate Stay Night though. Well, there are, but they're not translated.

EHh, that sounds like a giant clusterfuck to me. I'm kinda looking more for the believable, grounded in reality kind of VNs. Well I mean at the plot has to at least not be overly outlandish (read: Too Japanese :P). Clannad also looks like a good option, and I'd try School Nights if it was fucking fully translated already ._.

Clannad is LONG. Way too long. Here are some reasonable length VNs that (probably) fit your criteria the best.

Narcissu
Quartett
Planetarian
Kira Kira
Deardrops

Other reasonable length VNs that don't fit your criteria as well, but aren't TOO crazy outlandish and probably within your tolerance level if you liked Saya No Uta IMO.

Symphonic Rain
True Remembrance
Utawarerumono
Sekien no Inganock
Shikokku no Sharnoth
Kikokugai - Cyber Slayer

Oh, for the record, the concept of Fate Stay Night is pretty outlandish with the Holy Grail War and all (though it's not as bad as Demonbane in that aspect)

I myself am a very fast reader and have a lot of free time on my hands. Since I just finished watching Clannad and Clannad: After Story, I will give the Clannad VN a try. Then I am going to check out a bunch on this thread....VN's honestly are my favorite game genre now.

Well, as long as it doesn't have tentacle porn...oh wait. I decided on testing out Yume Miru Kusuri for now. I probably shouldn't have started it at midnight though -.-

So, I played the game in january and now I'm looking for some other VN,s that could be as good as this one. In the meantime, I have watched the animes: Stein's Gate (not really gave me the feels, but it's a great anime), Gosick (also...) and very recently Clannad (ok, this one got on me....). The thing is, I see you people recomending VN's, but there's always the lenght problem, so for me, to hell with that, I'm want something good.
Thought about playing Clannad, and I'm doing it, but well, I believe It's gonna be hard to feel the same way again with that. Been thinking about playinh Kanon, but haven't researched a lot about it.
Ok, let make this short. Do you guys have any recomendation? Lenght is no problem, school days are preferable, but not a must, and the players can identify with the main character? While playing KS, I could relate with the things that were going on, but the few time i have played Clannad, that's not happening.
Well, I guess that's it. Oh, and please, say something about a VN, like plot, or setting.
Thanks in advance ^^

There's a link in my signature to a recommendation chart. It says approximate length and genres of the VNs on it. It's as good of a place to start as any.

More importantly, you should wait on Clannad until you start to forget the events of the Clannad anime.

Lol I started playing the game and then decided to check out the first 2 episode of the anime, it tended to cut out some scenes and speed through others to make it an anime. Not complaining but they probably could had kept more of it in the anime itself. Not watching the rest until I finish the regular school arc first which would take a pretty long time
