Back on track, I wonder if learning from a computer like Deep Blue would make Hanako more comfortable.
I don't remember Hisao being an asshole much in either route...
On the subject, I reckon that she hasn't been playing for a very long time. I cannot imagine who her chess opponents would have been during her orphanage years. And yes, I agree with the opinion that Hanako doesn't have that competitive streak.

Little orphan Annie?
Probably Nia/Near--occasionally L, maybe
They say they hate Shizune? What is this? BLASPHEMY!

I just realised that I put a chess opening in a Hisao x Hanako chess game here.
Guess what opening was being played?
Post-Yamaku, what happens? After The Dream is a mosaic that follows everyone to the (sometimes) bitter end. Main Index (Complete)—Shizune/Lilly/Emi/Hanako/Rin/Misha + Miki + Natsume

It just reinforces my headcanon that she can take on several grandmasters simultaneously.

Scotch Game.
I thought it was appropriate. And Kenji would have approved too.

I only see that Knights are involved. Can't make the Kenji connection.
