New Ren'Py with KS has been known to be broken for a while on Gentoo:

Their own damn fault for not shipping with the bundled Ren'Py by default. KS has been known to not work with any Ren'Py other than 6.10.2, and porting it to newer versions is a painful and manual process, for which there is no real reason to do so unless you encounter new critical bugs such as 6.10.2's Retina display support on OS X.
