I think some part of the magic of Katawa Shoujo is that the subject matter and circumstances of its creation make you approach at it with... decreased expectations. That way, as you play through the game and realize how good it actually is, it takes you off guard, which makes you completely vulnerable to its emotional payload. That is not to say that people won't enjoy it if you hype it up beforehand - clearly, they do. Still, my approach is to say very little about my true feelings and opinions about the game, and simply tell people that it's an interactive romance novel that I think is really worth giving at least one full playthrough. And I tend to pester them about it if that alone doesn't pique their curiosity.
