Is this why alot of VNs are based upon outlandish and impossibly fantastical settings? KS seems to be one of the few "normal" ones. Oh the irony.encrypted12345 wrote:You could look through the Recommend a VN thread.guestsometingsomething wrote:Well, i am interested in this too. I just completed all 5 (good) paths of KS, and this got me interested for more.
However, KS was my first VN that i played, so i don't have any clue what to look for. Any suggestion for good VN's?
Anyways, like I mentioned in that thread, here's some words of advice.
Among emotional visual novels or nakige, Katawa Shoujo is really weird. Most nakiges rely on plot or atmosphere whereas Katawa Shoujo relies on characterization and realism. Acknowledge that you won't find a VN that's quite like this, and you should be able to enjoy the Visual Novel medium more.

You say that like it's a bad thing. But yes, the good ones that VN players praise anyways. The most of the "normal" ones are pretty bad. "Normal" VNs I can recommend are a couple of Romeo Tanaka's works like Family Project (It's very, very Slice of Life, but good even if slow) and Yume Miru Kusuri (May seem similar to KS, but the execution and tone are very different), Key Visual Arts stuff like Kanon, Clannad, or Little Busters (They dip into magical realism though), Kira Kira (Avoid if you have anything against Japanese sung music), and A Profile (Made by the guy who made Sharin No Kuni and G-Senjou No Maou, but less "out there" and less good). I also heard Da Capo was decent and Da Capo II (Unrelated plotwise) was good, but I can't attest to their quality.newnar wrote:Is this why alot of VNs are based upon outlandish and impossibly fantastical settings? Re: Similar style of game
It's almost a crime to not mention "Shira Oka: Second Chances". Romance, humor, action... And I loved all characters. And in this one you feel like you're the character. It takes a long time to finish all routes, and its very hard, but it is very rewarding. I had many feelings in KS, but Shira Oka hit me much harder, specially the secret ending....

Anyone got a VN recommendation with true happy ending, preferably not to bitter sweet.
I want a 'Happily ever after' story I guess.
Now everything leading up to that can be full of twists, drama, and turmoil.
Shuffle! definitely has more of the fantastic elements found other games of the genre, but the depth and characterization will totally strike a chord with KS fans.
Would you come with me if I ran off to be a pirate?

K I'll check out Shuffle. And I'll do it after pumping myself full of opium. You know, for the anaesthetic effect. Too much feels.

Re: Any VNs similar to KS?
Playing through Clannad right now, finished the Tomoyo and Kyou/Ryou arc of it and lets say there is definitely more drama from the plot than KS, but it still holds a slightly realistic point to it. The illusionary world and the orbs of light is a nice idea, sort of like KS background change after each act. The main difference is the sheer amount of choices in Clannad compared to KS
Re: Any VNs similar to KS?
the only VN i've played besides KS is Monmusu Quest so i cant help you there...

To start here is a little something to listen to while searching and reading about the following Visual Novels. - -
This post may be dead or dying but I could not help but notice that some Visual Novels were left out so I will reinstate those that have been said and add a few unless I missed those as well.
Yume Miru Kusuri - However I only really fell in love with Aeka's ending. - http://vndb.org/v44 -
True Remembrance - No choices to be made but none are needed if your Visual Novel is this beautiful. - http://vndb.org/v103 -
Homeward - I have not finished this one but so far it has not disappointed. - http://vndb.org/v7536 -
Clannad - Extremely long but worth every minute of it. - http://vndb.org/v4 -
Shuffle - I have not actually played this but once I finish up "Homeward" this is next. - http://vndb.org/v28 -
Tears 9,10 - Just reinstating here I have not actually played this one. - http://vndb.org/v8407 -
(P)lanets - Just reinstating here but have heard a few good things about this one. - http://vndb.org/v5936 -
Edelweiss - Just reinstating here I have not actually played this one. - http://vndb.org/v903 -
Kana, little sister - Just reinstating but is supposed to be one to look into. - http://vndb.org/v2 -
Steins;Gate - I know absolutely nothing about this. - http://vndb.org/v2002 -
G-senjou no Maou - Just reinstating here but have not actually played this one. - http://vndb.org/v211#main -
Ever17 - Is supposed to be extravagant, but then again you cannot trust anyone who uses the word "extravagant". - http://vndb.org/v17 -
Brass Restoration - If you want more disability in your Visual Novels. - http://vndb.org/v167 -
Crescendo - I have this... I should get around to playing it sometime, it is supposed to be (I believe these youngsters say) "Off the chain!" - http://vndb.org/v29 -
Narcissu - Single ending but that just means more sleep for you! - http://vndb.org/v10 -
Hanbun no Tsuki go Noboru Sora - Too lazy to google it but it is here. - Find_A_Link_Yourself_:).com -
Cross Channel - About some kid doing something. - http://vndb.org/v66 -
Eien no Aselia - Supposed to be good (From an unreliable source). - http://vndb.org/v74 -
Shira Oka: Second Chance - About trying to be who you really want to be, or something like that. - http://vndb.org/v4738 -
Monmusu Quest - It is a sequel to a game that does not exist... but hey it is the best sequel! - http://vndb.org/v7853 -
Umineko no Naku Koro ni Chiru - Don't ask me about the game just click the link. - http://vndb.org/v2153 -
Katahane - Almost forgot this one, even if I don't know much about it no Visual Novel left behind...That last part does not have much weight. - http://vndb.org/v22 -
Mizuiro - This one is cute, not much more. - http://vndb.org/v22 -
Some of these are like Katawa Shoujo but many of them do not have resemblances but none the less these are all noteworthy. (Yes you should be taking notes)
Well that concludes the list, well of course I still think Katawa Shoujo is the best Visual novel, and this is a very limited list it consists of some good Visual Novels. If you really want to search go to " http://www.vndb.org " for a massive list of them.

Re: Similar style of game
I'll second Shira Oka. It's a bit fluffier than KS, and the sprite artwork isn't as good IMO, but it's still fun and may surprise you with feels every now and again. The plot is essentially "Groundhog Day", except instead of repeating one day over and over it's three years of high school. I've only gotten three of the endings so far, and I have my hopes as to what the secret ending is, based on what Paladin said, but I'm enjoying getting there. It's got more of a character-building aspect to it - you have stats and you can improve them through different activities - and this combined with the ability to choose how you want to spend your days reminds me a lot of "The Sims" series of games. You put whatever name you want in as the main character, so the characters will all address you by your name. (YMMV: The little chibi version of the main character that you see when you're doing activities also looks a lot like me, so that helped me with immersion)Paladin wrote:It's almost a crime to not mention "Shira Oka: Second Chances". You are not alone, and you are not strange. You are you, and everyone has damage. Be the better person.
