I've been curious for a little while, and since the topic of the license has come up recently, I'd figure I asked.
I get the major point of how the license works, but I've wondered about where that eventual line is drawn between Derivative work and similar concept is.
For example, would any type of story that is based on a school that partly or mainly focuses on assisting those with physical disabilities fit into the license, even if locations, other detailed concepts and so on are completely different from KS.
I think a recent thing that had this was with two movies. White house down and Olympus has fallen. They are pretty similar in concept but are different movies.
With something like that, would it be against the license or not.

So pretty much, if it doesn't use any assets or anything part of KS at all as a specific medium, it's fair game?

Congenital.

I've seen some lying around but they aren't in 300dpi so I'm guessing they are not suited for printing. Some of them look good but I thought maybe there is an official or recommended one.
I like this game so much I want to print a cover and put it in my shelf with the rest of my collection.
Kinda. Both the Japanese and French translation teams have printed physical copies of KS (JP team only Act 1 release) so those are probably official enough

If I recall correctly, right after the scene where Rin walks in on Emi and Hisao fooling around in bed, is it just me or do we never see Rin again?? If that's the case, what do you think happened to her? I don't think she went to the gallery since according to her path, it was Hisao that kind of convinces her to accept the offer, so if you're on the Emi path, those interactions would not have happened. Do you think Rin is actually sad that Emi and Hisao are together and just simply didn't show it in that scene? Or am I remembering incorrectly and they do encounter Rin after that point?
What happens to other characters in routes that aren't theirs is always a good point of speculation. I think there's a good chance things go like you imagine, but who knows.

What's the deal with all of these "mods" that always crop up? I really don't understand the drive to go all the way to create some kind of renpy add-on as opposed to just keeping it as fanfiction or moving on to your own project.
The law of diminishing returns doesn't apply to fandoms and some will go to any lengths to get more of whatever they're hooked on.

Of course not. We don't own the concept of a school for disabled children, it's too general to fall under copyright (as in your example of two similar movies). In fact there are/have been about 10-15 visual novel projects spawned by KS's popularity that work on a similar premise or a minor alteration. Some focus on mental disabilities, some in otherwise "dysfunctional" kids or whatever.
What we do own is KS's name, setting and characters, plus everything we actually made in KS like the script, art, music and so on. So yes, if you make your own crippled girls porn simulator that has zero connection to KS except the concept, it is fair game.

Is there a way for regular mortals like me to access those covers? Or are they super secret and not available to the plebs?

If Katawa Shoujo was shown in a different medium, say a movie or perhaps a graphic novel, do you believe it would be as we'll received as it was, or be as successful? If you do think a different medium would've worked better, what is it?

No, I don't. KS didn't sprout or something, it was made as a VN.

I don't know why this never occurred to me before, but I wonder what Japanese font is equivalent to Playtime With Hot Toddies…
The Japanese font is called VL Gothic iirc.

Really?
But I didn't see the booth...
...or did I missed it? :(
I'm still having some hopes up for someone to create a KS figma...
Just as an attendee. If we have a booth we announce that kind of thing.
