I believe he's simply referring to the sense of shame involved with telling people outside the community that you're a fan of such a deplorable form of entertainment as Visual Novels, and or the related fan fiction.
Deplorable?
Well, i didn't have much of a problem getting the people i like.to read ks and fanficton.

Everyone I've told looked at me like I have three heads, so I stopped telling people.

Persenting, Dialogue Between Helbereth and a Close-Minded Individual:

"Hey, you should read this Visual Novel."
"A Visual Novel? You mean like a dating sim? Pfft, those are just stupid cliche teen dramas and wank material for anti-social individuals who can't get a date."
"No... this is actually kinda amazing."
"Hahaha- that's so funny."

Now concludes Dialogue Between Helbereth, and a Complete and Utter Dick.

Yup, just about there.
I would have asked them if they liked the Walking Dead Game.
Because it's basically a visual novel. Only fully animated.

Well yes, but you can't call it a visual novel because of the lack of novel-ness, that's why it's referred to as an adventure game.
And sure, in this case they are still very similar, in people's minds a visual novel and an adventure game are seen as to very different things.

Also KS isn't based on a popular IP, and it doesn't have zombies. Thank god for that...

One does not simply "get" silentcook to do stuff for him
As far as colors go, there's only one option for me.

This probably doesn't apply as much anymore, at least considering the progress the archive has made. Maybe sticky-ing should be considered.
