What did you misread that as? O.oCharmant wrote:I, uh...Misread that... >.>; Anyway...Steinherz wrote:I seriously have a thing for albino chicks.
"Albino dicks", probably.Steinherz wrote:What did you misread that as? O.oCharmant wrote:I, uh...Misread that... >.>; Anyway...Steinherz wrote:I seriously have a thing for albino chicks.
Either way, it's all easily taken by a casual observer as justification to keep on saying it wrong in the mistaken belief that it's not wrong.Valjean Lafitte wrote:I never asserted that Rin should be said any way but "Reen" except for when I linked to Crowst's comment. Even then it wasn't so much of an assertion but a suggestion that you could be wrong.
It's understandable that a naïve reading of it would result in that, yeah. Otherwise we wouldn't be having this conversation, because hardly anyone would get it wrong. I mean, I had it wrong the first time I encountered the name too, which was probably almost a couple of decades ago now. But that misinterpretation was too long in the undoing, because the wrong pronunciation was reinforced in me by others also getting it wrong (up to and including commercial anime dubs). If only someone had corrected me sooner, I wouldn't have had so hard a time fixing the mistaken habit in my head. Which gets to the heart of this matter, to me: correcting a common mistake in a visible manner is a public service, not some kind of dread offense. When I said that "in" is almost always spoken with a short I, it was only to explain why I think its perfectly understandable that people would prefer to pronounce it that way.
I guess that is the difference. I don't see it as negative, and I don't see the value of the joke as being higher than the value of not misleading people.I really am, believe it or not, just annoyed by what seemed to be snide corrections made when people just want to enjoy an innocent joke. That's the difference between us--it's not that I don't place a high value in doing things correctly, it's that I don't think it's worth being so negative over!
I know just the type, brother. I bet they put them in Comic Sans, too.Where I work there are people with higher paying jobs than I have who work in HR that routinely post and send out memos littered with some of the most atrocious misspellings imaginable.
This goes beyond fandom, though. It's basic language use. There are pronunciation mistakes in other fandoms that annoy me, but I don't understand why anyone would take it this seriously, which is why I find snide remarks like CoffeeDrive's annoying.
You can do so, if you like. But you should at least realize that you're genuinely misleading many more people who are not as informed as you. And likewise, CoffeeDrive should be able to try to counteract that.I should be able to capitalize on the fact that other people are pronouncing a name a certain way for the sake of a silly joke.
Speaking up about it every dozenth time it comes up hardly constitutes a "campaign". Trust me when I say that trying to correct this every time would quickly turn into a full-time job.I did not launch a campaign to let everyone know how wrong they are.
Around the twentieth time, you stop caring so much about the politesse, y'know? If you want to criticize the joke itself for that flaw, you're more than welcome to. But it wouldn't hurt to be less of a dick about it
Nothing says you can't disagree/argue and still be friends!I think we both want to drop this and be friends. So let's.
Just for you.Has anyone attempted a Suzu pregnancy test meme? I tried earlier and failed miserably.

Ironically, I think my favorite part of that is the words. "squirt squirt"KeiichiO wrote:There are way too many words in this thread.

What is the joke, at that point?Eurobeatjester wrote:I can appreciate the Rin in a bin joke. The proper pronunciation of her name doesn't take away from the joke.
