There are doors that can still be closed when locked but the handle won't work to open it anymore. They're not een that uncommon.
In my office there's even a door where once locked only the inside handle will open it and the outside one won't.

My apartment had door that could be locked before you left. Made worrying about whether or not I remembered to lock the door so much easier .

There was just one door, and all I had to do was make sure the mechanism in the knob was set to automatically lock. Which it always was.

The real problem was making sure I remembered my keys so I didn't lock myself out, which is the sort of thing you only do once, then make sure you never do again.

I know you didn't ask me, but my friends live in downtown Columbus, OH and all of their doors (to the outside at least) require a key to lock or unlock, even from the inside.

In Central Europe (Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, etc.), doors like that are basically unheard of.

Well in their case, it's probably for security reasons, since they live downtown and all. In most suburbs or in the country it would be entirely unnecessary.
