Now, why do I have the mental image of Hanako not being a person, but a certain golden ring of fame in human form, and her burn scars concealed Tengwar lettering?

That fire which killed her "parents" was set by the Nazgul, in order to have confirmation of her true identity. They failed in their mission only because Gandalf the White fought them off.

Well, now I just feel sad.

D'ya think Hanako would enjoy LOTR?

Well, Tolkien's works on Middle Earth has many tales, some of great sorrow and some of great valor and hope.

I think we can add this to the list of "alternate reality" KS versions.

"What if KS took place in Middle Earth".

KS2 premise, right there.

The gifts seemed proper, and Hanako obviously liked them. She liked them because that is pretty much the only way she can still be like a "child", obviously grown up way to fast because of all her history in the middle school (typical, seems that no one is spared of bullying nowadays).
However, not only that it effects positively the reader's understanding, it also conveys the message that regardless if you pay not much or a lot for a present, the message is the same in both cases: you do genuinely care about the person.

Yeah, Hanako is definately a conflicting character. Part of her still wants to live the childhood she missed, while the other wants to be treated like an adult. I think its something she'll start to grow out of once she's found love and security with someone.
