Yeah, I can get behind this, as well as bhtooefr's theory on Emi's and Shizune's respective sexualities.

That's an idea… a lot in my headcanon is defined by other people's writings. In your case, it's the effort to actually do something different from what happened in Developments, simply because it was too solid and massive to budge—you have to take a lot of it wholesale or not at all. You can find echoes of many other characters which subtly crept into my own—in forgetmenot's case, it was Kagami Takahashi as a fully-realised person, whom I've 'borrowed' with permission. Helbereth's Aiko Kurai is also fully-realised, but not in a way I can deal with so far. The list goes on, and since I suspect much of it is subconscious, I have to reread things to make sure I can credit the people I've reflected or borrowed from…

The track captain's name is Kenta. I have no idea where that started, but it seemed to have spread, and there's nothing to contradict it.

While Miki canonically doesn't get along with girls and doesn't interact with Emi much, I suspect they have the same best friend - Kenta. (Emi's best friend being Kenta is actually canon, IIRC, and it's not Rin.)

Same here. For instance, I know that some part of my view of Lilly and Hanako's relationship was informed by Sisterhood, and some part of Hanako's internal monologue was informed by Hanako's Story. Aiko is definitely part of my headcanon!Yamaku, as are Kagami and Mean Time to Breakdown's Momomi even if they haven't been mentioned. As with all authors I wind up stealing borrowing bits from others as well. On that note...

Understandable. Like you, I'm very much a proponent of creating a "'verse" for my story, so it winds up building onto itself. Thus, taking certain things out of the DevelopingVerse might require some tinkering before insertion to one's own headcanon .

I feel that Miki is the youngest child of a large, close knit family where all her siblings are brothers, hence her tomboy nature and why she hangs round guys a lot. While she has a lot of 'bros', she considers her few female friends as her closest (go Suzu!). Because she's part of a large family, she hates to see people alone, which leads to several attempts to befriend Hanako when they start at Yamaku. Despite her best efforts, Hanako can't handle Miki direct approach and is scared off each time. Realising she's doing more harm than good, Miki backs off but always keeps an eye out for her from a distance.

The downside of being a 'bro' to most of the male student body of Yamaku is that beyond those who know her well, the rest of the female body consider her a bit of a slattern while her bros see her as 'one of them', which makes them uncomfortable with the prospect of dating her, all of which understandably frustrates her. So when a male transfer student who doesn't know about her reputation is placed in her homeroom, she hopes he can see her in a way that others can't. Yeah, that's how I'd spin a Miki route.

As for losing her hand, I think 99% of us would go for an accident with power tools. My personal take on it is that her Dad is a self employed builder/handyman/craftsman and his sons help him with the business in the workshop. Trying to prove to her brothers that she can do their jobs too, Miki gets a hold of one of the tools and things kinda...get out of hand. As for WHEN it happened, I'll go for ages 11-14.



If Hisao never went to Yamaku, I believe the only one of the main girls that would come out all right is Lilly. Emi doesn't open up to anyone, Shizune and Misha's friendship gradually falls apart, Rin remains Rin (can't think of a way to describe what this means), Hanako doesn't have anyone to help her come out of her shell and is ultimately abandoned by Lilly, who gets her wish of being permanently reunited with her family.

One word: Scissorlips. As Dewelar and Brythain said, some fics do some things so well, it sticks with some people. When I'm was first reading Breaking the Sound Barrier, I was thinking "why is Miki friends with Molly! She's supposed to be friends with Snoozu!" I fine with other pairings, but Miki/Suzu is my fanon one.

And my hierarchy of headcanon sources, if things conflict:

The VN > Reality (I'm not budging on the Japanese school law stuff, even if dev statements contradict it) > Developer statements (unless they're that the VN will be updated in a future release, then they win) > Fanfiction not released by developers

The only absolute canon is the VN, though, and anything else can be contradicted (and sometimes dev statements can be, too, by non-VN sources other than reality). And, reality will occasionally trump the VN when I need to do world-building.

In any case, the VN contradicts Miki being friends with any girls. (And reality also contradicts the portrayal of Suzu's narcolepsy.)
