Thank you. I appreciate your feedback. I think the positive responses to this first story are giving me more encouragement to continue work on the second. That said, I'm always leery since sequels never seem to match the first showing.

I hope it's not literally a sequel to this one, because some stories are really cheapened by sequels...

Nope, no sequels (though I did post a draft alternate ending to "Hisao's Gift" in the comments on that story). I don't like sequels either. They rarely work out and are often superfluous if you wrote the original story well.

Actually, I've been tossing around bits-n-pieces of the new story in my head for a while, but the parts weren't coming together as a whole...until today! Not sure what the inspiration was, but I had a "here's the story" moment, grabbed some paper and pens and started writing. Three hours, two pens (cheap ones) and 32 pages later, I'd written the first draft.

I'll start typing and editing tomorrow. Hopefully I can post sometime toward the end of the month. (Work is pretty busy right now though, so we'll see if I have any time in the evenings to work on it.

New story (also a Rin/Hisao pairing) is much more light-hearted and filled with symbolism and references. I smiled while I was writing it!

Perhaps it's serendipity, or malice on the part of the universe, but when I clicked on this post to read its contents, my playlist had worked its way around to an appropriately somber song that sources from elsewhere, but seems to match the overall melancholy tone of this story.

I went and found it on YouTube so I could share:

Mortality is a difficult topic for the average KS fan to grasp, but I've pondered the ultimate end of the various paths Hisao follows, including a number of completed pseudo routes and my own foray into route writing. Life isn't a straight line, and doesn't always go where you expect, especially when you already have things working against you--this seems like something you understand, probably all too well.

In any case, when I extrapolated from the Rin&Hisao ending, I arrived at a similar place you seem to have found, but I'm not sure I could have written it with as much depth. Whatever else you choose to do, I suggest you continue writing if it isn't your job already. If you're willing to continue contributing here, I'll just mark that as a "W" for the whole forum.

Funny, the whole time I was writing the story I was listening to a loop of "Radioactive." :D

Honestly, though, it was actually "Raindrops & Puddles" (my default go-to-Rin song) or, more often, just a quiet room (which is a treasure to find in my life).

...and I do see how the song you linked to fits the mood!

I stand by what I said, the story came to me unbidden, I didn't go looking for it--I just cleaned off the "afterbirth" so to speak.

I write as part of my job, but writing isn't my job, and I write what other people want to see, not what I want to write. Most of my job involves telecoms and meetings about things that don't interest me. To quote a sage Yuuko, "I wish I could quit this job."

As I stated in a separate post, I'm working on a second story that finally came together for me yesterday. I earned my significantly better half's ire by locking myself in a room for 3 hours and hand writing the whole thing out--ignoring her in the process. Bit scared about the prospect of posting it--I'll inevitably compare it to this one.

Anyhow, muchas gracias for the kind words!

Thanks Etokie!

As I've stated before, I'm overwhelmed by the kind response the story has received. It really gives me some motivation to continue with my next story--and maybe another after that.

(I just wish I had time to write AND read other people's stories more!)

I just can't picture Rin, even a 'broken' Rin, falling into the cyclical pattern the alt ending hints at. The original ending shows her detached from reality (...well...maybe MORE detached than normal...) but doesn't lock her into predictability.

That's just my thoughts & preferences however. I don't believe there is a 'right' ending...esp. as both kinda kick your heart in the nads.

Well, she did say in Act 2 that only crazy people talked to trees. I only caught that the second time reading through.
Totally beautiful and staggering piece of writing; you are a credit to the forums :D

Thanks for the compliment! I still have a hard time when I go back and read this one.

I haven't had the opportunity to do much writing the past few months, but I have a new Rin story in-work. The working title is 'Rin: More Than Words'.

That'll make 3 Rin pieces for me...I wonder what that means?!?! :?

Necroing this as part of my trek through the library, something I'm trying not to do but there is just . . . . So much feels here. I has thinking a older, graying Hisao (with a fantastic beard) but somehow, this is better. It's still sad, but hoping for goo much is something this game has taught me is like yelling at the rain: you cannot combat the inevitable.

Huh, must have missed this one earlier. Sad as it is, this one is a much stronger effort.

Thanks, and I agree. I was much more inspired (and had much more free time) with "Hisao's Gift." I never did get "Clearer Than Words" to sound the way I wanted it to, but I'd been working it off and on for three months, and it was time to get it out there before I fiddled it into extinction.
