Here's chapter 3, for your viewing pleasure. I didn't really like this chapter too much when I wrote it, but it introduces Luke to Hanako, which is one of the most important parts of the story.

Oh, I also went back and posted some basic information about Luke in the first post if you want to get a better idea of his appearance.

*********************************************************

Chapter 3: The Big Day

My watch alarm’s piercing beeps woke me from my slumber. I groaned and hit the button to disable it, then reached over and slipped on my glasses.

Welp, today’s the day. My first day of school at Yamaku High School.

….Damn I’m nervous.

At least Hisao agreed to walk with me, so I have someone to help show me the ropes.

I hate going out into public without a friend or someone to latch onto.

Whatever, I need to hurry up and get into the shower before some of the other guys get it. Thankfully, I managed to get up early enough to be the only one in the showers.

Back at my room, I opened up the closet and took a look at one of the uniforms. A basic long-sleeved collar shirt with a green jacket and tie, with long green pants. Back at my old school, our uniforms were simply a collared shirt and khaki pants/shorts. I always liked how Japanese schools appear to have much cooler uniforms than American uniforms. This one wasn’t quite as cool as the ones I saw in, say, Persona 3, but they were still nice. I slipped one on.

I still had a few minutes until Hisao was supposed to come around, so I passed the time checking a few things on the internet through my laptop. The school had wireless internet, which was nice. It was pretty fast too.

At about a quarter to eight, I heard a knock at my door.

“Hey, you up?”

“Yeah, hold on.” I closed down my laptop and opened up the door.

“You ready?”

“Yeah, let’s go.”

We talked a bit as we made our way to the school building. Turns out Hisao is somewhat into video games too. Maybe we could play a round of Halo or something later.
As we made our way into the main building, I saw a tall man with messy black hair and a brown coat in the lobby. He noticed and approached us.

“You’re Luke Fisher, aren’t you?”

“Yes sir.”

“I’m Akio Mutou, you’re homeroom teacher. Welcome to Yamaku.” He extended his hand. This is, what, the fourth shake in two days?

“Nice to meet you sir.”

“Please, the formality is not necessary. Now then, do you want to introduce yourself to the class?”

“Well, do I have to option not to?”

“Yes, not every student likes being the center of attention. You don’t, right?”

“No, I don’t.”

“Ok then, I assume you do not want to introduce yourself?”

“No, not really…”

“Very well, come on, we’re going to be late.”

This guy didn’t seem too bad. He kinda reminded me of my mathematics teacher back home. Laid back and friendly. They even look slightly similar, although Mutou’s 5 o’ clock shadow wasn’t nearly as thick as my old teacher's.

We reached to door to 3-3 soon enough. “You can just go on straight in and sit down. There should be an open seat near the back, you can sit there.”

As he opened the door, I took a look around the classroom. The room and the students themselves looked pretty standard. I noticed a cane leaning against the wall, as well as one student who didn’t seem to have a hand. I also noticed two familiar faces near where Mutou had instructed me to sit: Misha and Shizune were sitting just in front of my vacant seat. However, there was also another face, this one unfamiliar, that caught my attention.

A few seats over from where I was sitting was a girl with long dark hair. Her hair looked like it had a purple tent to it. From what I can see, she looked really cute. She seemed to notice me staring and covered the right side of her face with her hand and sunk a bit into her chair. I guess she’s shy like me…

I made my way over to my seat. I felt several sets of eyes upon me, but tried to ignore it as I took my seat. Hisao took his seat near Misha.

“Alright class, just wanted to remind you that we have a new student with us today. Luke Fisher is from America, so don’t rag on him too hard if he doesn’t know what he’s doing. Anyways, last week we left off….”

A few heads turned in my direction when he mentioned me, but I expected that. Mutou is the science teacher, which is good, because science is my best subject.

I managed to get into the swing of the class fairly well, taking notes on the somewhat familiar subject. The class seemed to fly by, and before I knew it, the lunch bell was ringing. As I began packing up my stuff, I noticed that Hisao was talking with Shizune and Misha.

…Crap, I guess he’s going to eat with them. I don’t have anyone to eat lunch with, and I don’t really want to intrude on them…Damn it…

Hisao finished talking with them and made his way over to me.

“Hey, did you have any plans for lunch?”

That made me perk up a bit “Well, not really, why?”

“I was hoping that you could come with me, there are some people I’d like you to meet.”

“You’re not having lunch with those two?” I motioned over to Shizune and Misha.

“Well, I was going to, but I wanted to introduce you to some more of the students here. They're fine with that.”

I hated going around and being introduced to people, reminded me of when my parents would parade me around funerals and reunions and the like, introducing me to people I’d never seen before and would likely never see again. But it was either this or go off by myself, and I had no idea what I was doing, plus I didn’t want to be rude.

“Sure, that’s fine.”

“Great, let’s go.” I followed him as he walked over to that girl I had noticed earlier. The shy one with long dark hair. “Hey Hanako.”

“H-Hisao! H-hello.” Her speech was very quiet and stuttering. I noticed up close that she has beautiful amethyst-colored eyes that were quite eye catching. I also just barely noticed some red marks on the right side of her face, through her hair. Scars, it looked like. Getting past those scars though, she was beautiful. My heart jumped a bit just looking at her.

“Were you planning on having lunch with Lily today?”

“Y-yes…”

“Would you mind if we joined you? I was hoping to introduce Luke here to you and Lily.”

She looked at me. I gave a smile and a quick nod. “Hey.”

“H-hello. U-um, I’m ok w-with it, but I don’t know i-if Lily will…” I could tell she probably didn’t really want me to come. I don't know whether she just doesn't like me or if she's just nervous.

Really, there’s no need to be so nervous. I’m as scared of her and this Lily person as she is of me.

“I’m sure she’ll be perfectly fine with it, you know her.”

“Y-yeah, you’re probably right…” That made me feel a little better.

“Ok then, come on Luke, follow me.” I did so, and I noticed that we were heading to a familiar location: that room that Misha and Shizune were trying to avoid back on our tour. So this must be the pair of girls that they were talking about…

Hanako gently opened up the door. “L-Lily? It’s me, a-and Hisao is with me…”

Hisao stepped up behind her “I’ve got another guest with me, is that ok?”

“Who is it?” A voice said from inside.

“The new transfer student, Luke Fisher.”

“Oh, he’s here already? Of course he can join us.”

I breathed a sigh of relief. We made our way inside, and I got my first look at this Lily girl.

She had long blonde hair and was facing away from us. The way that Hisao and Hanako were speaking, as well as the fact that she didn’t turn to greet us, gave me the idea that she might be blind. This was further supported by a thin retractable cane leaning up against the wall. We made our way over to the seats. Hisao sat opposite of Lily and Hanako sat next to Lily, leaving me to sit opposite of Hanako.

Great, let me sit opposite of the girl that looks like she’d rather put a gun barrel in her mouth than talk to me. I could have sat across from the girl that apparently can’t even see me, but noooooo….

Lily opened up her eyes, and I was immediately drawn to them. They were a bright blue, much brighter than mine, but I noticed that her pupils were extremely hazy, almost to the point where you couldn’t see them. Yeah, she must be blind.

Huh, blonde hair and blue eyes…this girl can’t be Japanese.

Lily gave a slight bow. “Welcome to Yamaku, are you finding everything ok?”

“So far, this place is great. I think I’ll like it here.”

She smiled. “That’s great to hear. So, what made you want to come here?”

“Well, I’ve always been fascinated by Japanese culture, plus I’ve always wanted to come to a boarding school. My parents looked into Yamaku, and it seemed like a place that would fit me.”

I had been looking at Lily this whole time because I knew that Hanako probably wouldn’t appreciate me looking at her, but I couldn’t help letting my eyes wander over to her. She was looking at me. Our eyes met, but she turned away almost immediately. And I thought I was shy….

I almost didn’t notice Lily ask a question: “Would you like some tea?”

“Huh? Oh, uh, sure. Um, is it iced?” I didn’t really like hot tea. I grew up in the South, where iced sweet tea was practically the national beverage. Along with Jack Daniels.

“No, but I could make you some if you’d like it…”

“Oh no, it’s alright, I can make it myself, thanks though.” So I set about making myself some tea, and after I had finished I sat back down. We spent a while talking, me explaining about America as well as how I learned the language, some of my hobbies, standard stuff like that.

It was quite nice actually, even if I didn’t get a real lunch. I wasn’t all that hungry anyways. I think the fear of a first day of school can do that to ya.

Eventually the bell rang to signal the end of lunch.

I'm bored out of my skull right now, so here's chapter 4. This is where the title comes from, in case you were curious about that.

I'd like to give special thanks to Smoku, who helped me come up with the plot for this chapter.

Oh, there really is a girl at my school who's the daughter of a best-selling author. She's pretty nice.

******************************************************************************
Chapter 4: Good times

The rest of the class passed uneventfully. Hell, I can’t remember what we even did. It was math, so that might have explained it.

As the class neared to a close, I began to wonder what I was going to do. I guess I could head back to my room and play some games. Maybe get some more progress in Persona 3, maybe play some Fallout…

Hisao had already left, as had Shizune and Misha. Hanako was here, but I sure as hell wasn’t going to bug her. I decided to just grab my backpack and head back to my room.

As I left, I glanced at her out of my peripheral vision. Damn, she really is beautiful, aside from the scars. A lot of guys might get turned off by them, but I wasn’t, I was somehow able to look past them. Maybe her hair and eyes were just taking my eyes off them. You know, I really wish I could ask her out…

Gah, I can’t do that. I barely know her, I just met her today, what the hell am I thinking? Besides…

…How would she react if she found out what had happened? Why I’m here? How would any of my new ‘friends’ react if they knew? They’d probably shun me, just like all my old ‘friends’ did. Just like all the girls did. I remember, one day when I managed to get up the courage to ask a girl out, what happened? She said no, she said I was a freak, that she wouldn’t feel safe going out with me. Getting shot down by the daughter of a New York Times best-selling author, who was loaded, not to mention the girl that all of the guys wanted to screw. Nah, they didn’t just want to date her, they wanted to screw her. They said it like saying they just wanted to, you know, date her, or kiss her, or cuddle, or do anything emotional was uncool. Anyways, getting shot down like that was one of the worst moments of my life.

F. My. Life.

Ugh, I hate it when this happens. I think about something that made me upset, and now I'm all upset and I'm going to be in a bad mood for a few hours or so.

I let out a deep sigh and hung my head. I feel like crap now. I unwrapped the ear buds around my PSP and started blaring some metal in my ears. I kept my hands in my pockets as I left.

I think I felt Hanako’s eyes on me as I left, but I didn’t care anymore.

I went straight back to the dorms. I wasn’t really giving off a good impression of myself, but I had already given a good enough impression yesterday and half of today.

As I got into the hallway, I saw Kenji inspecting the wall next to his room. I guess he heard me approach and turned to greet me. He looked straight at me for a few seconds, maybe squinting his eyes, you couldn’t really tell though these extremely thick glasses.

“…Luke? That you?”

“Yeah, it’s me Kenji…”

“Huh, you sound kinda down dude, what’s up?”

“I-it’s nothing. Just, thinking of a few things. A few things I regret and wish I could forget.”

“Hmm, things you wish to forget? I might be able to help with that…”

“Nah, you look busy with….whatever the hell you’re doing.”

“I’m trying to see if I could install a keypad lock on this door. It’s not too much trouble, I’ve been wanting to do it for a while anyways.”

“Do what?”

He got up and motioned for me to come into his room. I was a little nervous, but I went in anyways. His room was pretty messy, papers, charts, graphs, and puppets were laid around all over the place. He reached into his closet and pulled out a brown paper bag.

Oh no, he doesn’t…

Yep, it’s a bottle of whiskey. Premium too.

“Huh? Huh? Come on man, Hisao shafted me on it last night.”

I'd never been one to drink. I always told my classmates at my parties that I would be the designated driver. I managed to save a lot of people's asses by doing that.

“Well, I wouldn’t mind it, but I agree with him on the dangers of the roof.”

“Ok, how about my room then?”

‘Eh, no offense, but your’s is a bit…cluttered. How about my room? I’ve got a TV, and I brought a couple of crappy movies. Those are always better when you’re wasted.”

“Sure, let’s do it.”

********************************
A few hours later….

“So, the bitch just told me to go fuck off basically, and I was like ‘Well fuck you too bitch, I don’t need you! I’ve lived 16 frickin’ years without a girlfriend, I don’t need one now!’”

“Hahaha, it’s like I told you man, all women are evil. Know why I say that? I had a girlfriend once. Oh she was real nice, until we did it one night. I swear to God that bitch sapped my life-force, I swear it! They’re like vampires man!”

“Nah dude, they ARE vampires! Why do you think they’re all obsessed with them? Have you ever seen that Twilight shit? And what about that little time once a month, huh?”

“Dude, I think you’re on to something! Really! I need to write all this stuff down, might need to refer to it later...”

“Nah man, we can remember it, don’t worry about it.”

******************************
Next morning, 6 AM

I moaned as I looked up from my bed. I didn’t have the covers on me. Kenji was nowhere to be seen. I fiddled around with my watch for a second until I remembered which button shut off the alarm. I could barely see anything because I had apparently fallen asleep with my glasses on, and they were smudged over to hell and back.

I feel like I’ve been hit with a frickin’ train. So this is a hangover, huh? Damn it….

Well, at least I forgot all of…whatever I was so pissed off at.

And then I remembered:

“SHIT! I HAVE SCHOOL TODAY!”

Great, my second day of school and already something bad is gonna happen. Either I go to school with a splitting headache and several other unpleasant symptoms, or I stay in my dorm and miss class…

I decided to suck it up. I stumbled my way over to my bag and began rummaging through its pockets. Eventually, I found the bottle of emergency ibuprofen I always carried around. I greedily popped several pills, probably more than I should have. I made my way to the bathroom, and after a quick vomit into the toilet, I brushed my teeth in an attempt to remove the mix of vomit and alcohol from my breath. I wasn’t sure if it worked. I took a shower after that.

Ugh, what should I do to get rid of this? Well, I feel like going outside and getting some fresh air, yeah, I’ll do that.

On my way outside, I knocked on Kenji’s door.

“Go away, you evil she-devil!”

“Kenji, it’s just me…”

“I said go away! I have a shotgun, and I’m not afraid to use i!.”

I’m not sure whether he was kidding or not, but I didn’t really want to take the chance.

I made my way outside and sat on the first bench I came across. Well, normally the sound of the birds chirping makes me feel better, but the hangover had made me sensitive to both sound and light. I rubbed my temples. I really made a mistake last night. What. The hell. Was I thinking? Oh, I’ll just drown my sorrows, that’s what I’ll do! I don’t even think I knew if that would work, I’ve never even drank before.

I laid down, and after just a few seconds, my consciousness drifted away…

After an unknown amount of time, I began to hear a voice.

“H-hey, are you o-ok? Wake up p-please! Hey!”

“Aggh! Who is it? What?” I groaned out as I opened my eyes. I found a familiar pair of eyes looking down at me. Even hung-over, I could still recognize that amethyst color.

“…Hanako?”

“A-are you ok? You don’t look so good…”

“Well, my head feels like it’s going to split open any second now, I’ve got a burning throat from puking, my stomach is cramping, and I have to go to school in…what time is it?”

“A-around seven.”

“About an hour. Yeah, I’m doing just fine. Just freaking fine.”

“W-well, what happened?”

“Sadness, some bad movies, and a lot of booze.”

“Y-you’re hungover!?”

“Smart one there lassie, now can you go away? I need sleep.”

She looked down, then she turned around and left. I closed my eyes again.

I eventually felt something on my shoulder shaking me.

“For the love of Christ…WHAT!?” I yelled in my native tounge.

I opened my eyes, it was Hanako again. She looks like she had just jumped from my sudden yell.

“U-um…” I noticed that she had a glass of water in her hand.

“Ugh, I’m sorry, I’m just a little irritated. What do you need?”

“Um, c-can I see your h-hand for just a second?”

Ok, whatever. I stuck out my hand. She grabbed the top skin of my hand and lifted it up, then let go.

“What are you doing?”

She handed me the glass of water she had.

“Y-you’re dehydrated. Here, d-drink some, it should make you feel a little better…”

I sat up and took a sip of the water. “Thanks, but how did you know I was dehydrated?”

“Y-your skin. If you’re dehydrated, t-then the skin w-will take longer to snap back into p-place.” She reached down and produced something she had laid on the ground. “H-here, I also m-made this for you…”

They were two sandwiches on a piece of paper towel.

“Oh, thanks Hanako. I really appreciate this.”

“Well, I’m s-sorta used to it. A-akira, Lily’s sister…she’s a b-bit….”

“Wild?”

“Y-yeah. She always s-says that the best way to prevent a hangover i-is to properly prepare, but even she g-gets carried away sometimes.”

“I see.” I said as I finished up the last of the sandwiches. “Thanks a lot Hanako, I really appreciate this.”

“I-its no problem.” I handed her the glass and stuffed the crumpled up paper towel into my pocket.

“Regardless, thanks. You really saved my ass there.” It’s true, my headache was now just a minor pulse, and my stomach pains had subsided. “I’ll see you at school.” I waved as I made my way over to the dorms to change.

I’m a little curious as to how Hanako noticed me, and as to why she was perfectly willing to help me out even though she just met me and seemed very scared by my presence the day before. For now, I don’t really care. For all I know, God Himself sent her as a guardian angel or something. Hell, she fit the looks of an angel.

I considered checking on Kenji, but I didn’t want to get a round of buckshot through the head, so I went straight to my room to put on my uniform.

When I entered the classroom several minutes later, I saw Hanako sitting at her desk near the back. I smiled and gave her a nod as I walked by. She smiled back.

Totally worth it.

I like this plot, especially the narrative, its a lot more... how do I say, realistic/gritty/down to earth a little bit more than Hisao's narrative. I also like how the story is going... keep the chapters coming in.

At some parts it felt like you were writing that character based on my personality. (I'm shy, don't drink much, liek Hanako obviously, just to mention a few relatively irrelevant things) Either I am very generic or it's just a coincidence, but it makes it enjoyable to read when you can pretty much understand the thought process of the main character.

Maybe that's also why I'm jealous of your character. One of the problems of reading fanfic when you're tired and sad, I guess :P

Anyways, i'm continuing to like where this story is going. My only question up to this point is if the fic is going to continue leaning towards Hanako or will we get to see Rin and Emi show up in the mix in more than just a brief cameo?
I'm suprised to see Hanako being so open in only a day. I know her personality would want to help Luke after seeing him in his state but ehhhhh.....

and Luke's mind seems fast in the way he talks about Hanako; "Great, let me sit opposite of the girl that looks like she’d rather put a gun barrel in her mouth than talk to me." to "A lot of guys might get turned off by them, but I wasn’t, I was somehow able to look past them. Guess his thoughts got really turned around at the end. :)

Well, I was planning on having him meet Rin and have more of a personal encounter with Emi, but eventually I scrapped these ideas. I might go back and expand on this, however, because I'm also planning on writing a couple of one-shot episodes to fill in some gaps the story ended up leaving.

True, I explain it a little bit more in the next chapter. Most of the characters end up OOC at some point anyways.

Well, his opinion of her was always "Wow, she looks pretty nice." The reason he said that is he was referring to the fact she seemed shy and somewhat bothered by his presence. He doesn't want to make her all worried, and if that means he doesn't sit across from her, so be it.

In other news, I'll probably post the next chapter within a day because it's really short.

Because I love you guys so much, and because it's rather short, here's chapter 5 for ya.
This one really gives hints as to why Luke is at Yamaku, and a little glimpse into his mental state.

Chapter 5: Silent Library

The first half of that day was mostly uneventful. Well, that’s not true, I went with Hisao, Shizune, and Misha to go eat out at a place during lunch. I think it was called Shanghai or something. Anyways, the two girls tried to recruit me into the student council, but I managed to persuade them that I didn’t want to. I was new, foreign, and had no experience with student council. They actually stayed after lunch period was over, but I managed to excuse myself and get back to school before the bell rang. They didn’t come back until the beginning of fourth period.

After school, I once again found myself with nothing to do. I still feel like I didn’t thank Hanako enough for this morning though. I remember Hisao mentioning that she likes to read in the library after school, so I decided to head there. I wanted to check out the library anyways, maybe get a book or two.

As I entered, I was greeted by a somewhat cute librarian. She looked a little older than the students here, maybe she was a local college or university student who works here part-time. Anyways, I told her I just wanted to browse. And browse I did. I looked through both manga and some actual novels. I grabbed a novel that caught my attention and then wandered around, looking for Hanako. Sure enough, in an isolated corner of the room, hidden between some bookshelves, I found a set of beanbags, and sitting in one of them was the girl that had pretty much saved my day this morning.

I plopped down in the beanbag next to her. She was so absorbed in her book that she didn’t notice me until I sat down. She jumped.

“Oh, sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you. Um, I just wanted to come and say…thanks again for this morning. I don’t know how I can really pay you back.”

“I-it’s ok, really.”

“Though, there is something I need to ask you.”

“Y-yes?”

“…Why? Why go out of your way to help out someone you just met? Someone who most people would have just let suffer for their stupidity?”

“W-well…I saw you a-as you left the classroom. Y-you looked really down. I w-wasn’t sure why you w-were down though, but i-it seemed bad. I s-saw you out my window this m-morning, so I thought something b-bad might have happened. You l-looked horrible, so I decided t-to help out.”

I smiled. “Well, once again, I really appreciate what you did. If there is anything you need, just let me know.” I reached into my pocket and pulled out my PSP and started unwrapping the earphones. “If you don’t mind, I’m just gonna check out this book. Unless you don’t want me to bother you?”

“N-no, it’s ok. You’re not b-bothering me.”

I smiled again and placed the ear buds into my ears. I played some metal while I browsed through the book. I managed to get a good fifth of it done by the time it started getting a tad late. I swear that as I was reading, I noticed her looking at me a few times through my peripheral vision. Eh, probably just my imagination.

I gave Hanako a nod as I left. I checked out the book on my way out. This time, when I got to the dorm, Kenji wasn’t in the hallway. I went straight to my room and played some video games for several hours, worked on some homework, and went to bed.

However, something happened as I slept.

I remember the dream.

I remember...dreaming I wasn’t stopped this time.

I remember the cold metal against my head.

I remember pulling the trigger.

I remember feeling the full force of the impact coming through the side of my head.

I remember feeling it all exit out the other side.

I remember falling, hitting the ground.

I remember the screams.

I remember white.

I…I remember seeing an angel. An angel that I could see through all the white.

An angel with long dark hair, beautiful eyes, and a scarred face.

An angel that wrapped her arms around me, and assured me with a sweet voice:

“Everything will be all right.”

I awoke screaming. I’m not sure that dream deserved a scream.

I hoped as I laid back down, the dream would come back.

It didn’t.

I was sad.
