It wasn't torture, it was a group of thugs targeting her father and burnt the house down with her in it to run from the cops.

Well that was certainly darker and more depressing, but at the same time I don't think I've ever seen the story behind how Hanako got her scars done this way so it was a very interesting read. I'll follow this I'm curious to see where it goes from here.

This is an interesting and new idea. I don't think I've ever seen the origin of the fire tied into outright murder before and stories about the girls first years are rare as well.
I can understand how some people might think it's a bit too dark, it does bring in criminal drama into a series that mostly just focuses on character drama, but it could work if done properly.
I'm also quite interested in how you're going to do a story where the readers know right from the beginning that Hanako is NOT going to get better and overcome her problems. That's still years ahead of her after all.
