When you consider the culture that anime/hentai (classified differently), along with the a multiple of VNs, manga, and doujin that exist; no wonder there is no need for actual sex anymore. But I have to admit the Japanese really make better things; said that ever since I saw Godzilla at the age of 5. Actualy, I have read that Westerners having sex with a Japanese often freak them out by switching from being passive to aggressive in the middle of sex and switching roles like that is just NOT in the rules of sex that Japanese society teaches them.
Of course, what I've read could all be a crock of fecal matter, too. I've never researched anything seriously about the subject. Hardly a paradox. As was already said here, the first is likely the result of the second. Japan's porn industry is so advanced that real life sex is less appealing to them. In fact, that's a problem of the modern world in general, though it is much clearer in Japan.
The weird perversions are just extensions of the thriving porn industry. Perverts exist everywhere, but in Japan, there is a market that caters to them. The american porn industry, for example, probably isn't successful enough to even consider making movies that only a hundred people will watch. In Japan, they'd do that, and not only does that satisfy the perverts, it also exposes others to the fetish, causing some of them to adopt it.
