So I heard this thread was about Fate/stay night.

...It's an eroge. Why is this baffling?

Fate/Zero is not an eroge. It's just a light novel. So all of the Servants are male except stupid Arturia has to come back for plot reasons. Fate/stay night, being an eroge, has 3/7 Servants as females, two of whom have very flimsy summoning justifications.

EDIT: Ninja'd. Um. It is now, I guess. S'pose we should fix that.

...What was this about again? D: Novels that aren't KS, basically?

I sincerely hope you meant "downloaded for free".
I should stop posting in forums altogether if my proofreading is bad enough that everyone has to correct each of them...

It's not your proofreading that's bad, it's G3n0c1de thinking to enjoy something you don't have to buy it to show appreciation.

Or something along those lines.

Fixed, apparently.

On the original subject, I'm not sure why people are making the assumption that being introduced to VNs through KS makes people more receptive to VNs than introduction through any other VN. It's just been popularized more outside of the normal VN community than most other VNs, so it happens to be the first VN of many people.

It would be helpful if we had figures about how many people got onto the VN scene through KS versus other means, such as watching the anime adaptation of a VN first, then playing the game. Sadly, getting such figures would prove difficult.

One statistic I'd like to know is how many downloads the game has had, which would give us a ballpark figure for the size of the fanbase.

Torrent totally blows away any chance of getting a firm count of dl's. Not that it really matters, because even with a firm count of dl numbers you can't tell how many downloaded it and never installed it, tried it and were bored, tried it and hated it, or tried it and liked it so much they founded a Third Reich in honor of their waifu 67 years before KS was finished. (Now that is being "poplar".)

Hey, 67 years is my joke. And KS still isn't finished.
It is true that torrent is almost impossible to get a correct fix on downloads, let alone how many people had to redownload it because of connection and other issues. Like G3n0c1de wrote, I actually saw the anime of Shuffle first but ran into KS first when looking for the VN since it was free at the time. It served to enhance the experience of the others.
It definitely is true that KS has been publicised more with people outside the normal market being the fact that it is free and also that it is one of few English-first produced ones rather than having to wait for the translation patch in the Japanese market.

I know torrents and mirrors and just general filesharing undercount it, and likewise you can't distinguish between downloads that are never used, or the same person downloading every new version which overcounts it, but I would still be interested in download stats as a starting point. The blog announced when they hit 500,000 hits back in March, so they probably have the numbers.

We don't, but it's measured in tens of thousands.

Did you stop in the middle or did you actually read on? Aeka's path was easily the most dramatic.

I like how we went from talking about how KS is the gateway drug to a VN involving drugs. But I did finish all the paths to that VN and still have to agree that Aeka's was the most dramatic.
Putting that aside I believe the final release will be the huge deciding factor to some for just like in a videogame you can have a well scripted story mode but the online features and multiplayer sucks. Not that I'm saying that will be the case here but this VN does have the ability to turn people on and off to VNs based on the viewers taste. (Speaking mostly to those who see this as simply a cripple-porn game)

And thanks to this thread I started playing Yume Miru Kusumi.
