Did the game change your real RL attitude towards cripples?

An event that occurred to me just a few minuets ago(I donated a relatively large sum of money(that is, for a teenager pulling money out of his pocket) to an organization that helps deaf students), and some moments later, thinking about deafness in general and whatever this game came to my mind and I had to wonder whether there might have been some subconscious influence there("Who knows? Maybe there are some really cute deaf chicks out there" ).

Maybe there was an influence and maybe there wasn't, but it got me thinking: did this game somehow changed your attitude in real life towards the whole cripple-ness thing? I am not talking about donating money, I am wondering about more general things. The way you talk about the subject, the way you feel about it. If you personally know a disabled person, did this game somehow change your opinion of him, however subtly? Did you start eating more healthily after playing the Emi route(call me a pathetic idiot, but I think I did... Shit, I am a patheitc idiot) or something?

Just my ramblings here. Thinking random thoughts is what I do.

I have to say not really. I always had an open mind to such things and I don't think I could change any more even after my cousin recently lost his arm in a car accident this past Thanksgiving. It is interesting that after I pay large attention to a game about cripples my own cousin becomes one, and he was training to be a chef (ouch). Such a case definitely would change a persons outlook on cripples so maybe KS did help me to coax with the incident better when it happened; I can't say with 100% certainty. So on a final note i'll just have to say that it most likely, subconsciously, changed the way I thought of cripples for the better. ~and not just Walmart greeters~

Actually, yes, KS did have a fairly noticeable impact on my attitude toward disabled people. I already had a more amicable attitude toward mentally disabled people because my Boy Scout troop had two mentally disabled scouts, and over time both me and my fellow scouts became accepting and protective of them.

However, I've never had that attitude toward physically disabled until I played KS. A few weeks after I played KS, I saw an episode of Family Guy where they made fun of someone in a wheelchair or something similar, and I was like "Dude, that's not funny, that's horrible." and I've had that kind of attitude ever since. I've noticed that even when I hear or read the words deaf or blind, I pay attention.

I've become more open to the idea of loving and dating disabled people as well.

These are some of my justification for saying KS is my number 2 favorite game, because it's one of the only games that has changed how I act in real life.

It didn't really change my opinion of the disabled, in most cases. When I saw someone walking minus a limb or a sensory organ most of the time I grumbled 'Lucky bastard' and left it at that. I always figured that since their brain was still fully operational, they were still as human as everyone else.

The game did teach me, however, that just because they're still mentally normal doesn't mean they can't be blasted with trauma. I always figured that most defects were from birth, so they'd had time to get used to it.

Although it doesn't really settle my main grievance, petty as it might be. They can get replacement limbs, read braille, learn sign language, take physical therapy, or generally just compensate for their issues. They can heal. You can't do that when the damage is in the head. They got off lucky.

It's not about the porn. It's an interesting interactive story with some very well written characters(some of which happen to also be cripples) which has porn as a bonus for those who are into such things.

Yes. In the "It Builds Character" scene Hisao tells Muto he doesn't know how to deal with the other students, in that he doesn't know whether to pay attention to the student's disabilities or to ignore them. Whereupon Muto responds that Hisao should "look behind the superficial. There's not a single student here who isn't just a normal kid behind whatever they might seem at first glance."

That scene really touched me. Hisao's uneasiness is the same uneasiness I generally felt towards the disabled and Muto's words really struck home. Because he's right. Disabled individuals are people with physical or mental hindrances and/or oddities and that's all. Focusing on disabilities is like focusing on someone's blue eyes ("Should I pay attention? Or should I ignore them?"). Unless it's relevant to the situation at hand, like having to drive your blind friend to work every morning, disabilities aren't important.

It's funny too because after I realized this I was talking to a friend who had played KS and he said his favorite girl was "the armless one". For a moment I was thrown, who was he talking about? Oh right I thought, Rin doesn't have arms. I then realized with some shock that I was no longer automatically identifying the girls by their disabilities but by their personalities, for example, the bossy one and not the deaf one.

Guess how many people who are actually in a wheelchair got a good laugh out of it There'll be a whole lot more of those than you think, probably.

Anyway, I'm not sure if KS -has- changed my outlook on the subject at hand. I do know a couple people with physical disabilities, including two spastics. One of those is a guy who happens to live only a few miles from my place, and he's one of the cheeriest guys I've known (he uses his electrical wheelchair to make tours of the neighbourhood on a daily basis, and he knows more people in my home town than I do XD).

I think the most important thing to keep in mind is that people aren't defined by their disabilities. People who were born with a disability are much more likely to joke around about it than those who lost a limb in an accident or something like that, though. Still, cut off my legs, give me a couple years, and I'll be pulling pranks out the wazoo with my prosthetics.
