How well with KS stand up to the other great VN?

So far (Not long really) I haven't seen any VNs that applies photoshopped real life pics as backgrounds like KS.

Well, most higher budgeted ones just produce drawn backgrounds. Also, its kind of annoying for a studio to have to send a photographer out to take pictures of scenery all the time. In general, I think that hand drawn backgrounds are also more popular.

Why would that be annoying for the studio? Isn't it the easiest way to get backgrounds: To let someone take a bunch of photos of different locations and apply a simple photoshop filter on them?
The only problem would be to get photos of a school. I don't think many headmasters would give you the permission to take photos that are going to be used in a visual novel with sex scenes (that will, very likely, take place in the school). It could cause trouble with the parents of the students and it might give the school a bad reputation. I doubt that the students would care, but you know how parents are.

I agree that hand-drawn backgrounds usually look better, but low-budget-productions happen to have simplified drawn backgrounds that lack details and look kind of empty. In that case, I would prefer a shopped photo. I have to admit that I didn't like the backgrounds in KS at first, but I guess I got used to them.
