We're very excited to announce the biggest milestone in Katawa Shoujo: Re-Engineered's history. We've been working on this update for the better part of an entire year, and we believe we pulled off something truly amazing.

We went ahead and remastered every single CG that matters into proper 16:9 aspect ratio in 1080p high definition, without any cuts like in the previous KS:RE releases. This effort was largely manual and took hundreds of hours. This is entirely thanks to our wonderful artist Niomesan and ZenMaruki who also helped out here and there. We're extremely grateful for all the help we've received.

This release also contains some quality of life fixes besides the main event, here's a non-exhaustive list:

• Added streamlined Steam Deck installer
• Fixed text centering in some specific non-standard boxes
• Credits now roll properly, with character sketches playing at the correct timings
• Better font rendering for CJK languages
• Choices are now randomized like in the original game, checkmarks included for all choices you have already chosen during former gaming sessions
• Added support for Steam achievements

The Android package name and signing keys have changed, this means that the pre-2.0 builds cannot be updated, they exist side by side. You may be able to manually transfer your saves but we cannot guarantee compatibility. We recommend using the 'Skip Unseen' option instead, it can get you back on track.

The Flathub release will be published in a few hours, and isn't available yet. An update will be released on this channel upon successful release. The same goes for all other unofficial packages too, that aren't in the hands of FHS for maintenance. (AUR, F-Droid etc.)

As always, if you discover new bugs please feel free to open an issue and message us. This release is rather experimental, and a lot of code had to be modified so the game plays nicely with the new CG-s and their event variants.

KS:RE 2.0 flatpak release

Steam Deck users (and also those, who embrace modern Linux infrastructure), this is for you:

For new users

You can get this release on Steam Deck by using Steam Deck installer, which you can download from our site. Nothing unusual here.

For existing Flathub users

Here be dragons. The old release, that you used before, has become "Katawa Shoujo: Re-Engineered Legacy". As we already mentioned in the release notes, the saves compatibility of KS:RE 1.x and 2.0 is basically non-existent, and since Flatpak/Flathub infrastructure is always forcing user to auto-update, I decided to give people control over when (and how) they want to update the game.

In a few days, the old package will retire and will point out to the new one. Your package installers (GNOME Software/KDE Discover/flatpak update command) will prompt you to update to the new package manually. You may choose to do it as soon as possible or just skip it for the later date. To reiterate: current Flathub installations will not update to 2.0 without user interaction/agreement!

You can install both packages simultaneously now, and either continue playing in 1.x, or start fresh with 2.0. If you want to transfer saves, you can do it: the old app savedata is ~/.var/app/sh.fhs.KatawaShoujoReEngineered, and the new one is ~/.var/app/sh.fhs.ksre. But remember, this configuration is unsupported!
