Katawa Shoujo Pixel Portraits

Post by Gardraphius »

Just a little late for Katawa Shoujo's 8th anniversary, but I have something to share.

My skills in pixel art are increasing, so I'd like to spend some of my free time contributing back to the community. I have drawn pixel portraits of the girls of Katawa Shoujo, and more are coming. Anyone may use these for profile pictures or their own projects, no credit needed. All portraits were done at 64x64 and have been 4x upscaled to 256x256 pixels. If you want to resize them, keep this in mind. The best way to resize them is with Paint.NET by reducing them to 25% or 50% of their size with the Nearest Neighbour scaling method. Without further ado, here they are:

Oh, and have a Mutou on top of that. I haven't forgotten about Misha or the other characters. Akira, Hideaki, Hisao, Kenji, Misha and Miki will be next, I expect to get them done by the 15th of February (POSTPONED). Every single character will be getting portraits too, with no exceptions.

Those are actually pretty good.

The only issues I have with them is that Rin and Lilly's hair colors blend a bit too much into their backgrounds. I think more ontracting colors would help them pop more.

Still, it's tons better than I could ever do.

Thank you. Lilly and Rin's background colours were deliberate final decisions as their eye colours as backgrounds closely correlated with Shizune and Emi's respectively. Anyone who wanted to modify these could easily do so, as the backgrounds are simple; they are only there to fill blank space. I will keep this in mind with the next upcoming characters though, thanks for the feedback.

Out of curiosity, as Hisao never gets a sprite, what art will you be using for his picture. I mean, you can't leave the guy out. He's the main character. I think Iwanako is also important enough to include, but you'd have to get creative for that one.

Yep, both Iwanako and Hisao are getting pixel portraits. Even a character as seemingly insignificant as the Shopkeeper will be getting one eventually. I do plan on leaving Hisao last of my next list for this reason. I had this image in mind to work off of as a base:

The only characters that will be left out are: Hanako's parents and Emi's dad. Both of which don't have sprites anyway and it would be bad taste to do them anyway. Lilly's mother will also be kept out for lack of a sprite. Saki Enomoto and Rika Katayama, the infamous April Fools' jokes will also be done. No one's being left out.

Katawa Shoujo will never fade away. no matter when, there will still be someone introduced to KS or feel the way this game has changed their life. :D

These are really nice. I hope you're still having fun painting. i like the hanako one the most but shizune steals best bgd.
Pixel art sure has a charm to it. I've always wanted to make one of those environment pixel animation loops, but I look at some of the ones floating around and they're too beautiful so I give up.
I would like to do a katawa one if I ever git gud. Maybe the shanghai and fireworks display. You've got me all worked up now!
