I'm sure eventually, such technology would be possible (Geordi LaForge), but for the time being, translating the data into something a different sense can interpret seems a lot more practical. There's also the issue of how much the surgery will cost, what happens if something goes wrong after the surgery, and making the data interpretable to each individual's brain. If I recall, no 2 brains work precisely the same; they just tend to have the same processing functions in the same regions (i.e. frontal cortex for pleasure, as shown in another Star Trek TNG episode).
