So we have one side that thinks that Rin in a tin bin is so cute it's a sin, and another side thinks that Rin the teen eating a green bean for halloween is a sight that must be seen. At least they've both got their Rin hats on. :)
I always think of Emi as Summer and Rin as Autumn.
Here's how I see it:

Hanako: spring -- a season of new hope budding from a cold winter.
Emi: summer -- a season of warm and happiness that always seems to pass by in a rush.
Rin: autumn -- a season preoccupied with change, but full of warm colors.
Lilly: winter -- a season of cool beauty spent with the warmth of loved ones.

Shizune: spring and autumn -- seasons of diligence in planting and harvest.

I like all the girls in KS, but empathize with Hanako the most.

I always think of Emi as Summer and Rin as Autumn.
Misha is all four seasons, cyclically.

Misha at her old school is winter.
Misha after transferring to Yamaku is spring.
Misha after meeting Shizune is summer.
Misha after confessing to Shizune is autumn.
Misha after learning of Shizune dating Hisao is winter.
Misha after accepting their relationship is spring.

And so forth.
Rin is orthogonal to everything.
Stuff I've written: Developments, a continuation of Lilly's (bad? neutral?) ending - COMPLETE!

The player too. (except he begins from spring to remains forever in winter)

Ultimately, it's the fate of any thread of this kind.

As for the eternal Rin "rhymes with bin or seen?" debate, I like to pronounce it rhyming with "wine" just so I can annoy EVERYONE.

Hanako - Summer
When the summer sun burns as as hot as her bedroom did ten years ago.

Emi - Spring
because you put your willy in her bumbum

Rin - Autumn
Because nobody really likes them, but you have no choice. They're there. Grit your teeth and ignore it.

Lilly - Winter
Because when you pull the curtains open after it snows, you get snowblind. Lilly doesn't though.

am I doing it right?

I don't know why you would think I'm angry. And I like you too! I smile every time I see that goofy Pirate-Emi-on-the-rooftop avatar…
I was not even remotely implying that you or CoffeeDrive are "elitist" because you both place a high value on pronouncing names correctly. No, of course I agree that it is important to do so, and I am a little insulted that you think me so ignorant that I'd think otherwise.
I'm not sure what other way there is to interpret an intention to continue saying a name wrong despite knowing better.
There are dozens of ways you can kindly tell people that they are mistakenly mispronouncing a name without sounding smug or arrogant. The two examples shown above are not good ones.
They seem pretty innocuous to me, especially in a freewheeling atmosphere like this one, where jocularity is expected. Are you sure you're not just being thin-skinned?
Your entire post has a very negative tone to it. You diced my message into mini-quotes as if you had to attack me with righteous fury at every point.
This is a bewildering attitude. The point of taking small excerpts for quotes is to point out, in close proximity for convenience, exactly what it is one is responding to, without recapitulating unneeded parts and without putting words in the person's mouth. That's it. There's no implication of any emotion one way or another by doing so.
Your anger was not well-hidden, nor was your pride.
That's amazing, because I was feeling neither…
If you somehow think that statements like..
Atario wrote:I hope I don't have to point out by now that bin isn't a Japanese word
..do not seem to drip with condescension, you are mistaken.
I could have just said "bin is not a Japanese word", simply assuming that everyone reading is too dumb to think of that by that point in the conversation. Would that somehow have been less condescending? Instead I couched it as a just-in-case, because most probably did get it, and anyone in that boat could safely pass over it without thinking they're in question.
But you do know that, and I won't pretend you don't know what you as an equal human being obviously know.
I believe there is a term for the rhetorical trick shown here, but I can't think of what it is at the moment.
What do I know? I know that bin isn't a Japanese word. I know that Rin is a Japanese name. I know that, in Japanese, it is not unheard of to use English words. I know that this makes the phrase "rin in a bin" a remotely possible thing that Japanese person could say, and that if said in such an accent it would provide the exact context that that joke is looking for.
It still doesn't work, and for pretty much the same reason. The joke has no reason to exist but for the rhyme, and the rhyme can't happen unless something is being pronounced wrongly (due to whatever cause). Which means the joke becomes about mispronouncing things. And that's a far more esoteric level of humor than this thing lives on, I guarantee.
does it imply that I am an idiot trying to haphazardly make words from different languages rhyme? If your response was any indication, I guess it did.
It didn't seem haphazard to me at all. You were definitely telling me that -in is pretty much always with a short I in English, and that that's why Rin should be said with a short I.
  • 3. This guy isn't telling me anything I don't already know, and he sure is being a prick about it.
Maybe when you get a reaction like 1. on your list, it's because you *are* coming across that way.
In that case, the person in question would have to be purposely preserving and promoting the mistake despite knowing better. I'd call that a far worse sin than just not knowing better in the first place. Call me a cockeyed optimist, but I tend not to assume the worst about people that way.
You aren't saying "Actually, not to be a buzzkill or anything, but Rin doesn't actually rhyme with "bin", it rhymes with "green." No, in this golden age of online communication where civil discourse is becoming a lost art, you burst in with "Fun fact: Rin rhymes with "green!".
So, tone policing, then? Ok.
You're an American too, Atario. You know that when we say a thing like that out loud, it's usually with a smug look and a sarcastic tone; you're certainly not doing it to share a "fun fact" after all, but to point out how wrong and ridiculous you think something is.
Which is far milder than what someone would say who is actually angry, as you seem to think I am. I'm sure you don't need an example. And as you mentioned (via the qualifier "usually"), sometimes it is not said that way at all. So why are you assuming I am saying it that way?
I knew how "Rin" would be pronounced in her native accent but did not give enough of a crap
Then why did you go to all the trouble to assert that the wrong pronunciation is valid? Forgive me for saying so, but this reads like backpedaling.
If you are right, I apologize.
Apology accepted. :P
SilentCook, if you are reading this and think I should have just dropped the matter: I apologize, and please don't cook me.
Don't worry, he warns before he does anything drastic. Even someone who has had the run-ins with him that I have can trust him that far.
d2r wrote:As for the eternal Rin "rhymes with bin or seen?" debate, I like to pronounce it rhyming with "wine" just so I can annoy EVERYONE.
Now that's obstinacy I can get behind berind! For the advanced level, pronounce it to rhyme with orange. See, because nothing rhymes with that. And because Rin like oranges. And because oranges have rinds. And because this is condescension.
Eurobeatjester wrote:That picture of Hanako and Lilly is beautiful, but something seems off about Lilly's neck.

Again you're misinterpreting me, although I suppose you could say the same.

Please read the post again. I never asserted that Rin should be said any way but "Reen" except for when I linked to Crowst's comment. Even then it wasn't so much of an assertion but a suggestion that you could be wrong.

When I said that "in" is almost always spoken with a short I, it was only to explain why I think its perfectly understandable that people would prefer to pronounce it that way. But I was not telling you that that's why it should be spoken that way.

It's not "tone policing" to point out to someone that they could point out other's mistakes without sounding arrogant.

And I'm not backpedalling, no matter how much it might look that way to you. I watch more than enough anime to know how most Japanese names should be pronounced. For that reason I've never read "Shizune" as "Shih-zoon" or "Shih-zoonay" or "shih-zoony". It's "She-zu-nay". The "a" sound is somewhere between "eh" and "ay". The "e" sound is said quickly. I really am, believe it or not, just annoyed by what seemed to be snide corrections made when people just want to enjoy an innocent joke. That's the difference between us--it's not that I don't place a high value in doing things correctly, it's that I don't think it's worth being so negative over! In real life I'm a grammar nazi, believe it or not. Where I work there are people with higher paying jobs than I have who work in HR that routinely post and send out memos littered with some of the most atrocious misspellings imaginable. This pisses me off to no end, and I don't think highly of those people. But!--I don't let this attitude cross over into my online interactions. This indeed one area in which I can look at the classic "someone is arguing on the Internet" xkcd comic, laugh, and agree with the point it's making about online arguments.

There are pronunciation mistakes in other fandoms that annoy me, but I don't understand why anyone would take it this seriously, which is why I find snide remarks like CoffeeDrive's annoying. I should be allowed to be bend the rules of pronounciation for the sake of a silly joke--no, let me rephrase that: I should be able to capitalize on the fact that other people are pronouncing a name a certain way for the sake of a silly joke. I initially did pronounce "Rin" with a short I, but even though I soon figured out that there was an "e" sound, I did not launch a campaign to let everyone know how wrong they are. If you want to criticize the joke itself for that flaw, you're more than welcome to. But it wouldn't hurt to be less of a dick about it, just as yeah, it wouldn't hurt me to be thicker-skinned.

I think we both want to drop this and be friends. So let's. :)

Somehow I hadn't even thought of that while I was looking for Suzu pictures to use. All I could think while scouring the Shimmie for a good picture was how she has such a serious expression in most of them, which wouldn't make for a funny pregnancy meme. But, uh..in that scenario, I suppose her pregnancy would be no laughing matter..
