Duuno, it's not mine I would guess at a 3D modelling software - if you wanna have a crack at it, Blender's free and you can create some really impressive stuff with it.

Keep in mind, in the early days it was less "the devs" and more "lots of people on a message board shooting ideas back and forth randomly."
