I kind of wish they were drawn worse or "uglier" because that's sort of the point... people with awful burns aren't supposed to have those burns as a way to look unique or cute. They're supposed to be legitimately gross. It would add more meaning to looking past them, I think.

I've seen burn victims with scars akin to Hanako's and they look just fine. Should I go tell them off for not looking gross like they're SUPPOSED to?

Whoah, that's not what I'm saying. It's just that, the way the scars are now, they almost look cute, which makes it hard to imagine how bad they appear to look as the characters seem to imply, at least from what I've seen. I just think it would add to the message of looking past that if her scars in particular looked more gruesome instead of nicely pretty or even cool.

Whoah, that's not what I'm saying. It's just that, the way the scars are now, they almost look cute, which makes it hard to imagine how bad they appear to look as the characters seem to imply, at least from what I've seen. I don't recall the characters implying they look that bad. They try to avoid staring because it's shocking and uncomfortable but nobody seems particularly horrified. If anything, they're implied to be far worse by Hanako herself, probably because she spent years being told they were disgusting (and to be fair, they were probably far more unpleasant back then) and is self-loathing beyond belief.

Considering the amount of effort she puts into hiding them, I agree with the Spud, her scars aren't really an issue in her day to day life. Its her behavior that people seem to notice more than anything.

Sure the scars may cause her some physical discomfort, but really its social phobia and low self-esteem that are her real disabilities.

I'm rather surprised she isn't in more pain with her scars, I burned my hand when I was a kid doing something really stupid (pool noodles and bonfires do not mix) and I wasn't able to do much with it for a few months, but afterward It hurt for a good 4-5 years, and that was just my hand. Its not as easy to put a cast on a hand that half your body.

I've no doubt she went through Hell for the first year or so after her accident. But its been what, ten years since then? I imagine by now theres not much pain, but she does have to worry about stuff like her scars stretching uncomfortably, or sensitivity to uv rays. To the point where she'd have to be diligent about using sunscreen if she spent a lot of time uncovered outdoors.

That's the thing about burns. Burn up to a certain amount, hurts like hell. Go beyond that amount, and suddenly nothing ever hurts there again.

That's the thing about burns. Burn up to a certain amount, hurts like hell. Go beyond that amount, and suddenly nothing ever hurts there again.

Which, if Sisterhood is in your headcanon (as it should be), is what happened. Hanako mentions in Chapter 5 that she doesn't have much feeling in the scarred areas.

I actually believe that Word of God is that Hanako can feel sensation in some of the burned areas and some other areas are numb. Regardless of the situation now, revalidation was probably a living hell for Hanako. It is for most people who are burned to that extent.

Those pics are after recuperation. Fresh burns, depending on severity, will look anywhere from somewhat to incredibly worse. But given that Hanako's burns are a decade old, it's still pretty reasonable. I've seen actual burn victims who were downright cute so it's not impossible...Just unpleasant on account of Google refuses to siphon out the hard-to-look-at extreme cases from image results.
