Empathy is not bad. Caring is not bad. Overdoing it is bad.
NB: none of the above is a request

I recently lost my dad in an unexpected manner (don't really know the cause since we didn't open him up. Officially, it's hypertensive heart failure.). I must say that my elder brother's reaction (and mine) was very different from Emi's.

It depends on a lot of things, mostly because everyone is different, also the connection between you and your father might be different than Emi's connection with her father. Just saying :?
Everyone hides who they are at least some of their time. Sometimes you bury that part of yourself so deeply that you have to be reminded it's there at all. And sometimes you just want to forget who you are all together.

Aye. What surprised me was how close my bro's reaction was to mine.

Hence "possibly"...If the first thing you notice and the main basis of your attachment is "she needs comfort", chances are you will overdo it.

The Hanako bad ending sums this up pretty well

That's what makes her so complicated. I mean you can't help wanting to reach out to her, that's just human nature. But not to the point that she feels like you're smothering her.

Another thing to think about, we all feel a little sorry for her, but I'm trying to remember any time in the story where she gives any indication that she's lonely, or unhappy being on her own.

You know I never felt incredibly sorry for Hanako. Maybe it's because I'm a soulless monster (most likely). Don't get me wrong I like Hanako she's my second favorite it's just I never felt a strong amount of pity towards her. The only time I felt pity really was when I heard about her parents. I think my feels are broken. It's hard to explain. I thought Hanako all things considered had it well not good but not as terrible as it would seem. I think I'm digging myself into a hole here so I'm gonna stop.

Well, she doesn't seem unhappy. There's not much reason to pity her.

I know what losing a loved one is like (not my parent's well saving me but still) and I was bullied a lot when I was younger and I'm happy most of the time. No I'm not scared but still. Also why would anyone bully Hanako because of her scars they look radical. Oh I'm gonna regret that one. :(

I don't know if I feel sorry for her either. Hell a lot of people would have been destroyed by the things she's been through, so obviously she's a strong person. I guess sympathy describes how I feel more accurately. I went through hell in HS as well, and its made me a pretty unhappy, angry person inside. I hate the thought of seeing someone else go through that. I'd like to help if I can.

I think people miss a critical point about her bad and neutral endings. Deciding to ignore Lilly's advice to refrain from going to Hanako gets you the neutral ending. What gets you the bad ending is abandoning Hanako at the same time Lilly leaves (Go into town vs. let's call it a day). So I'd say the point about being there for her takes priority over the point about not overdoing it.

I think her extreme aversion to just about everyone in the world is pretty indicative of a problem. One can decide that doesn't constitute unhappiness, but...

No, but pity is what you do when you've decided someone's beyond help.

Exactly why there's no need to pity her.

True enough. Her panic attacks are a sign of a real problem that she needs help with Otoh, she said that even as a child she preferred to have only a few really close friends. That points to her being a classic introvert. So I'm thinking that's how she'd prefer things.
