An honest concern (Hisao & Rin, rather short, rather silly)

Post by branchingnarrative »

"Um Rin…" Hisao cleared his throat. He had intended to start this conversation casually and easily, as if the subject had just crossed his mind. Of course, now that it was time to broach the topic, he felt ridiculous.
"Um Hisao." With her eyes fixed on the canvas, Rin paused, brush held an inch from the swirling plane of blue and purple before her. Suddenly she plunged her brush, dripping with violet, into a freshly mixed can of yellow-orange, and splattered the resulting concoction across the center of her work. Hisao winced at this surprising vandalism of a week's worth of meticulous work. "Much better," said Rin. "It's a warmer sort of thing in the middle anyway, to be honest." Regarding the now mottled paint in the can, she remarked, "Need new cadmium though. Cause: random act of violets." There it was again—her penchant for puns. Rin's relationship with words was deeply disfunctional, yet with surprising bursts of passion.
"Anyway, I saw this thing on TV…" Hisao tentatively continued.
"What kind of thing? Did you catch it?"
Hisao let this slide. "…a documentary about, um, Asperger's." He felt his cheeks go red. "Have you ever heard of that?"
Rin's brow furrowed the slightest bit. "I think so." She looked perturbed.
"I was wondering, have you ever been tested for Asperger's?" Hisao tried to sound merely curious, but his shoulders rode at ear height. Rin was a master of impropriety; why should he feel so awkward about this?
Rin turned to look hard at him. "I think you would have noticed them by now, Hisao." She glanced at her posterior. Hisao's jaw dropped. Rin painted a few more strokes, then put down her brush. "Are you hungry?"
