Your favourite emotional romance VN?
Your favourite emotional romance VN?
So, what other romance visual novels have you all played that managed to incite manly (or not so manly) tears?
For me, G-Senjou no Maou. The "true"/Haru ending really had me going. The epilogue was some powerful stuff too.
Clannad really got me as well, but the impact was kind of diminished since I'd watched the anime first.

Re: Your favourite emotional romance VN?
Truth be told, most VNs I enjoy are of the more perverted sort but the characters and such are usually written well enough to draw up some emotion (I'm probably one of few who could honestly claim to play more for the writing than the porn...Those not written well end up deleted quite quickly)...Couldn't claim a favorite though.

I think Katawa Shoujo has to win by default. I typically go for video games, not visual novels, and the other visual novels i've read (Analogue: A Hate Story and Clannad) either left me with more questions than answers or wanting to beat the supporting cast and love interest to death with a crowbar. Really my extended experience with them is not positive, if not for Katawa Shoujo i'd think the medium was completely dead already.

I think Hatoful Boyfriend is by far the best thing to come out of the VN genre...

Uggggh, no! No, no, no! There's a limit to the ridiculousness I can take and this one was borderline! Funny though.Camoufrage wrote:I think Hatoful Boyfriend is by far the best thing to come out of the VN genre...

Re: Your favourite emotional romance VN?
For me it would have to be Symphonic Rain. The whole game was very emotional and although it was mostly depressing there were some parts that were happy, unfortunately however these were somewhat rare. In fact a major plot point is about the emotions of the characters (although going into too much detail would be a spoiler) and the recurring theme of emotion was really well handled and the reader feels the impact of it. The ending of Lise's route made me shed manly tears too, although there was nothing remotely manly about the tears shed in the epilogue.
ef - a fairy tale of the two was an emotional rollercoaster from chapter 3-6, constantly shifting between optimism and pessimism, but overall I'd say SR made me more emotional.

I quite liked it, but then I often like games where I need to keep notes.Xanatos wrote:Analogue is an exercise in tedium...I never could get through it.
You are not alone, and you are not strange. You are you, and everyone has damage. Be the better person.

Symphonic Rain. I have many other favourite VNs, but SR wins hands down when romance alone is considered. It's like a must-read for a fan of romance VNs.

My reaction to anything he said within the first minute was literally "wat..." over and over. This is amazing.Camoufrage wrote:I think Hatoful Boyfriend is by far the best thing to come out of the VN genre...

I'd really love to see someone make a video parody of this game where it's just a guy/girl sitting in a class room with a bunch of birds screaming or something.

I found Analogue fascinating, but I'm a history buff. A cache of diaries from a dead civilization and a couple of ghosts to help you interpret them is just the sort of thing that would give me boners (not literally). I like the two characters with their opposing biases and the somewhat nonlinear story.mysterycycle wrote:I quite liked it, but then I often like games where I need to keep notes.Xanatos wrote:Analogue is an exercise in tedium...I never could get through it.
KS is my favourite, however.

I'll tell you what I may get working on something like that, sounds easy enough to borrow a bunch of birds and ask a favor of my old science teacher I keep in touch with.Xden wrote:My reaction to anything he said within the first minute was literally "wat..." over and over. Yeah. I watched the Clannad and Clannad After Story animes before I played the game too.Acerus wrote:So, what other romance visual novels have you all played that managed to incite manly (or not so manly) tears?

That's why I'm holding off watching the Kanon and Air animes until after I play the VNs, and any other animes based off of VNs that I want to play.
One romance VN is Wanko to Kurasou. If you play the Risa route (it's really easy to pick the right options for that route) it will make you cry.
