Re: Yamaku Book Club (Meeting Resumed: July—Iwanako)

For Silentcook: Yep, not only that, but they talk back. The bigger issue is when I use somebody else's characters, like I do with KS, for example. When they talk back, sometimes they lie. Putting it another way, I haven't really figured them out enough to use them well. With this particular review ...

Re: Yamaku Book Club (Meeting Resumed: July—Iwanako)

I always watch them when they enter my office. Especially Holden. How they walk in frequently tells you what kind of session you’re going to have. It was easy with him, usually. When he uses his slink, it means he figured out a new way to try to piss me off. When he shuffles, that means he’s feeling ...

Re: Yamaku Book Club (Meeting Resumed: July—Iwanako)

If these chapters are set-up, or glue-ware, or whatever, they don't seem so simply because you've given a very realistic reading on what it's like to find yourself in a new environment. It's very skillfully done, whatever the literary purpose. I have noticed that Iwanako's vocabulary is a little ...

Re: Yamaku Book Club (Meeting Resumed: July—Iwanako)

Is this thing on? *taps microphone* Interesting comment, Brythain, and not all that loony. As diverse as homo sap is, fear and uncertainty seems to drive us down many of the same streets. The parallel is a good one. The chapters are a revelation for me. This will be a very fully-formed character ...

Re: Yamaku Book Club (Meeting Resumed: July—Iwanako)

We've had some articulate, well-thought out theories of Hisao here. In some cases, they seem to contend with each other. I don't think any of them can be discounted, at least not totally. People make thousands of decisions every day. In every case, they juggle a bunch of factors to come up with a ...

Re: Yamaku Book Club (Meeting Resumed: July—Iwanako)

FWIW: On silence: about Tuesday, people started lobbing Things That Must Be Done Before The Holiday at me. They stopped at about ten last night. Others may have that problem. On Leaty's blocks of text: two and three sentence paragraphs do not count as blocks of text in my world. On my box, they wind ...

Re: Firing Blanks - (Updated 6-27) Scrapped Routes

Nicely done. If you wanted to extend it a bit, you could work in quantum entanglement somehow. I like the story the way it is - just a thought.

Re: Yamaku Book Club (Iwanako Rising)

SirKaid's use of quantum mechanics is absolutely appropriate; I think we may be approaching the issue of Hisao's evolution from two different angles and coming to the same conclusion. Whoever Hisao is at the beginning of canon is different from who he is at the end, whether the difference is growth ...

Re: Yamaku Book Club (Iwanako Rising)

Quite so, Blank Mage. In a meta sort of way, maybe that's why I chose to do it like that. And your conclusions on the story are dead on. As Brythain says, it's a gentle push into a much more substantial work.

Re: Yamaku Book Club (Iwanako Rising)

If it please the court... I would like to address Question 3 in Chief Justice Brythain's instructions, being: Hisao as Everyman is hard to nail down; after all, he is somewhat different in each route. Can there be a canon Hisao apart from the bare material facts up to the end of Act 1 or so? And if ...

Re: KS Writing Club: Cherry Blossoms (Updated 06/20/15)

I have some suggestions on your process... I have many of the same problems with editing. 1. Lose the schedule. Any material presented anywhere for any purpose suffers (sometimes editorially - sometimes in quality and plot too) when a schedule becomes an important consideration. 2. Editing your own ...

Re: Yamaku Book Club (Meeting/Hisao Final Week Approach)

Okay, I have read Chandler, and liked him a lot. This parody is pretty good, not as bad as TheHiveMind fears. The one thing it lacks Chandler's analogs: "Tall, aren't you?" she said. "I didn't mean to be." Her eyes rounded. She was puzzled. She was thinking. I could see, even on that short ...

Re: Yamaku Book Club (Meeting/Hisao Final Week Approach)

Is it that a Hisao-centric piece would either replicate or contravene the canon? You'd have to change the assumptions for the canon character to avoid that. I'm playing with that now, but not for a Hisao-centric piece. Several of the KS-Of-The-Future pieces give him growth somewhat away from the ...

Re: Yamaku Book Club (Meeting Continuing 11 June 2015)

Perhaps the lack of "finish" is due to its nature as part of a mosaic. Had I a shred of sense and adequate time, I would have clicked the link and gone on to the story of the gravestone. I may not have the one and do not have the other, at least not right now. I see the one mosaic piece and want to ...

Re: Yamaku Book Club (Meeting Continuing 11 June 2015)

Erm.... well, I liked it. I liked it despite obvious flaws. I did not think it was especially innovative, but then I did not require it to be. The rather detached viewpoint may have been intentional, or may have been the result of a rush to publish. Don't know; don't care - it worked for me. It was ...
