For iPad, I would recommend Planetarian. Its nice kinetic novel that will give a basis idea about Key games. Unfortunately, it is not a free game. As for Mac, I have no idea as I do not own one.

As for Higurashi, I think you should actually finish reading the whole thing first before watching as the first person pov adds to the experience along with the fact it is the original source. If anything you can tweak the game with patches to have updated art and BGMs so they look like the anime ...

Its sorta like Chaos;Head, where you can choose the happy delusion, bad delusion, or snap out of it.
