Fan works certainly can affect the original work. First example that comes to mind is the Touhou series because of its immensely huge fan scene. I think in many cases touhou fanon surpasses canon, and many fans even totally disregard the "plots" of the original games, or other description...

How does fan fiction work in any way affect the original?. You will be surprised ... but they do. How? If you don't like it, don't read it.
